Personally, I think that's what the parking lot SHOULD look like at a fire station... and the police stations, military bases, and the teachers' lot at your kid's school.

Yes! But if they do not perform they should lose their jobs on the spot.

I have 4 sons, I've volentered at plenty of classrooms I would have fired 1/2 of their teachers.

Wife tought for 5 years, she'll say the same thing.

One of my brothers is a cop for a small town on the south shore of Long Island, NY.

He has a 997, a Cayenne, and a F250 PSD. Police make good money in Nassau and Suffolk counties.... NYC not so much, but they are catching up..

My bro is able to afford these nice toys because he also runs a small carting business when he is not "on the job", He has 20+ years in so in reality he works more in the carting biz than as a peace officer

Public sector jobs should be about service and not huge salaries.

Honestly I'm not even that aware of jobs that pay these sorts of wages in the private sector outside of executive positions and seriously talented folks (not the fire fighters and police officers can't be talented).

You're run of the mill excellent worker in the private sector however is not making $200k a year, is likely salaried and not getting any overtime for the overtime they are worked. I've been there.

Plus to add insult to injury they aren't getting the pension or time off that these public sector folks are getting.

None of the fire fighters, police officers or other public sector workers I know drive Porsche's though there are quite a few who have nice cars. No problem with that (to be honest it is none of my business) but the public needs to be more responsible for their money than they have been in the past. My personal belief is that we should be offering public sector works in dangerous jobs excellent benefits, stability - which means they can't be fired without due diligence and reasonable salaries for where they serve. Finally, they should be offered a good pension and excellent disability and death benefits.

Sadly, living in California myself I see so many stories of public sector workers behaving like wall st executives - even in my own little town by the beach.

Agreed. I have no problem with people serving the public being well-compensated. I have EVERY problem with them being well-compensated AND having unionization and/or tenure to protect deadbeat slackers and abusers of the public trust.

Pay cops, firefighters, teachers, etc. whatever is fair but show them the door as soon as they start taking it for granted getting fat, dumb and happy or on ego/power trips. In the private sector you have to continually demonstrate your appreciation for your job or it gets taken away. I see absolutely no reason this shouldn't be the case in the public sector.

Apparently some have missed that my Bro is a successful small business owner in addition to being a public servant.

In other words he works two jobs to be able to afford the toys he enjoys...

Actually looking at my brothers success I forgot to mention the wise real-estate investments he has made. So my bro actually works three jobs... He owns some rental houses, and a strip mall or two..

Its a bit disingenuous to judge the unknown owner of the 997 parked in front of a Beverly Hills firehouse...Maybe the 997 was owned by a Lawyer representing the Firemans union.

Or possibly the car is owned by a savvy public servant who has more than one income stream...

And then there is my brothers ability to pick some gems in the market...

My comments were not directed at your post but mainly the original post. Still, you have a point. I am judging the appearance but the post editorializes leading the reader to believe that those cars are owned by the firemen. We have no idea what the truth is but in CA - like I said we here so many stories.

Then you can pay for it, with YOUR money. Not mine.

There is no doubt that a FD job is a Great gig. You actually get paid to sleep. ...retire w/ a great pension after just 25 years. But you do have to put in something like 8 days a month.

Q; what do police and firefighters have in common? --A;. they both want to be firefighters.

The city of Beverly Hills has more money than they know what to do with. Take another look at the fire station in the picture, completed recently. I believe 100% that there are fire fighters, (even young ones), who can afford a 997 turbo.
