Things from back then that I would like (from what I read anyway):

- No TSA
- Sense of occasion when flying
- Food
- Better service

Things I like today:

- Cheaper price
- Being able to dress in what's comfortable for you and no one give a damn. (except certain Flyertalkers if you're flying in F)

If you can have the best of both worlds, that would be great. I wouldn't trade today for yesterday as I wouldn't be able to fly nearly as much as I have been able to.

And like I said earlier, I wouldn't want to be wearing a suit for a 9 hour flight. I would prefer to be comfortable.

Flying isn't cheaper.

1980's flight form Los Angeles to Hawaii $330 round trip.

But I do agree that I wouldn't want to wear a suit and tie just to get on an airplane.

However I don't think pajamas are appropriate either... at least if you are over five years old.

Not in a traditional sense...Today, you can apply for all sorts of credit card bonuses and use the US Mint to get your flights.

That wasn't available back then.

Right now, I can fly to Hawai'i for $5 per segment. Or I can fly to Peru, Easter Island AND Buenos Aires for a couple hundred dollars.

$330 in 1985 is $689.77 today.

I can't remember when the reality of it was glamorous. The idea was glamorous when it was expensive. Now that flying is cheap, it has lost its glamor.

I flew for the 1st time in 1976 (Detroit to Oahu) and we dressed up like we were going to a wedding, everyone did.... Flying today is just like taking a Greyhound bus.....

I travel Business Class oversees and its way better than back in the day. Food isn't as good, but I usually get almost lay-flat Recaro sleeping seats. Way better than the old days. They're getting a little strict on the drinks however.

Pop for Turkish Air First Class when you go to Istanbul if you can swing it. The best I have ever seen. We had a chef that served us, Lamp chops, Adana kebaps, hors d'œuvre . . . good wine, lay flats.

I remember when people would often clap when we landed . . . I have had filet mignon in coach with wine & free drinks . . .

+1

It is easy to glorify the old days and how orderly everything was. But remember, people were not free to chose what they wore, they were forced to comply with social norm. Nice to have stewardesses only, but I am glad my daughters can become pilots nowadays too and my wife has a driver's license ...

TSA sucks but other than that, I am okay with a ****ty Southwest flight with a fun crew that keeps it simple. I would not have been able to fly back in the day either. Everyone here assumes that they'd fly if they were transformed to those glorious old days, but remember, the standard of living back then was very low and chances are you'd be ridign the greyhound bus instead of Southwest. Same experience, but at least SW will get you there faster.

Cheers,

George

I started flying for business back in '74.......... I am still trying to figure out exactly where the inflection point occured when the airlines went "ugly and fat" on the stews..........

It was all down hill after that........ quickly degenerating to raging homosexuals with a ****ty attitude....

Gretch...that's funny. When I see one of those fellows, middle aged men stewardessing, handing drinks and $15 blankets to other middle aged men, I can't help but wonder what they thought they bought into when they hired on years ago, now probably locked in by the union. I couldn't imagine doing that job as a man....maybe a little sexist, sure, but walking the aisles all day at 5'4" and a womans frame is a little different than doing it as a full grown man...

Well, I know the sight of it does NOTHING for me.............

PC went overboard whan airlines were forced to hire overweight females with *****y, men hating attitudes who couldn't smile on a bet. Adding waggots to the mix was just injury + insult.

Airline travel IS worse than the bus or train now........ hell, the freekin subway is less offensive.

I know what I miss, good looking stewardesses. The flight attendants today are either old enough to be my mother or flamers. It would also be nice if they had some form of personality other the "beotch".
