Anyone wear a kilt?
Anyone have any experience here? I've been thinking about getting one for a while, just as a kind of unique replacement for shorts. Utilikilt, unfortunately, is charging like $200 a pop, which is more than I spend on anything that I don't wear to work or to protect me when I'm riding my motorcycle.
I don't throw logs for fun, but I do enjoy a good single malt. I don't play the bagpipes. I can sing Danny Boy. And I am, actually, Scottish. Are they comfortable? Do you go commando? Is it crazy? When you see someone in a kilt, do you think "What a nutjob!" or is it possible that a sane and reasonable person could pull it off? Just curious for some totally random opinions on the topic. ![]() Thanks, Dan

Fer Christ sake!
The modern "kilt" is nothun but a MAN-skirt! If you're Scottish enough to wear one by a real kilt, all 9 yards of it. Make sure it's in you clan's tartan as well. ( Why do Scottish men wear kilts? Sheep can hear a zipper a mile away) Yes, you can google my last name and it hails from Wick.

I wore a Kilt once..
My then long time girlfriend was a one boat Irish lass... and she worked her faerie magic and convinced me, a third generation Italian/American mutt that I should wear a Kilt to one of her families get togethers... So I did.. Did not go commando..wearing the Kilt was pretty comfy actually... but I don't think I could make a habit of it.

I think it's only weird if you are not Irish/Scottish or not at an ethnic event.

All my great grandparents came from Scotland. My great, great GF was the third son, so he got nothing and move to Canada, which is where my parents are from. The family has a crest, tartan and a castle (more like a house, but it does have a tower, which I stayed in as a B&B). Having said all that, no I've never worn a kilt. Given the right peer pressure/circumstance, I might be persuaded.

Great at a formal event - have seen some skater punks wear black ones, Goth kids do it as well. Seems like a reasonable thing to do. Better than wearing your pants passed your crack!

Sure, they double as blankets. Especially the kind that wrap over the shoulder.

I haven't, but I would, but I'd want it to be a real kilt. My wife has talked about getting me a utilikilt, but I don't think I'd want a cargo skirt which is what the ones at the Renn Faire looks like.

I'd rock one, but I have scottish heritage. It would have to be made from the family tartan.

My wife is Scottish (I'm not).
She made my kilt which I proudly wore at our wedding. And yes, I can pull it off. |

I have a kilt, and bagpipes, both in my family tartan. I was a piper when I went to military college, and they even let me wear my family tartan as my dress uniform, rather than the college's default Fraser tartan.
Not only is it incredibly comfortable, but it's also one of the best ice-breakers at a party/event if you're a single guy. |

Sure. I'd wear one. Especially with enough Highland fuel in me.
