Need pointers for shipping a car from NJ to AZ

Title says it all -- need to ship a Toyota from NJ to AZ via open transport. Anyone have good experience with a reputable company?

Heard there are a lot of scams out there. Want to get the car to AZ safe & sound, and I'm flexible with time.

Tried searching for this, and search came up empty.

Any suggestions? Things to avoid? Tell-tale signs of a scam?

Thanks,
-Z-man.

Horseless Carriage is HQ in Patterson, New Jersey...they got a 911S from Oregon to New Jersey just fine. Once there, into a container & off to Istanbul it went.

Enclosed transport may cost more, but it's definitely safer!

I used safe way auto transport once to ship a car from Philly to YNUTKLR in California. I thought they did a pretty good job. Car was not enclosed.

I liked them a lot more than DAS.

DO NOT USE DAS, paid for enclosed shipping and did not get it, they are the worst.

Depending on the vehicle enclosed may be a waste.

Have used Horseless with good results.

Moved a few cars from NY to TX using a small outfit that used small 3 car open transports. Tri state NE to DFW was the only route they ran.

You want to avoid a broker, a company that will not give you the drivers cell number, and anyone that does not go point to point, meaning the car goes on the transport and stays on till it gets to the destination.

Brokers have little to no control and will be useless if you need to file a claim.

If the transport does not go point to point the car could sit in a central depot for weeks waitin for a load going to your destination.

As someone who has shipped and received by shipping quite a few cars, you got some good advice in the last 2 posts:

1. Don't use DAS.

2. Don't use any broker. Like said above, brokers are simply "middlemen" who go and find a third party shipper. Obviously, they have little to no control over the shipper.

I personally would use Intercity. They are a family owned business, own their own trucks, are always available to talk to you by phone (they always answer their phone, and take a lot of pride in their well-earned reputation.

I used SWAT to ship my 944 out here when I moved. Very nice guys, reputable and go out of their way to keep in contact with you. Car got here fine - only issue was the driver's side mirror glass popped off, but I don't blame them for that one. IIRC it was about $900. Not bad at all.

There are other "better" outfits out there, but a lot of them are high-dollar and cater to concours guys and/or serious collectors. Unless that's what you're transporting I can't see spending more money than it takes to respray the car just to ship it.
