Colt vs Sig rifle.

I want a 556 rifle.

I'm drawn to the Sig 556 because of my overwhelmingly positive experiences with their pistols. But, for obvious reasons, a Colt rifle has great merit.

What would you buy? $1500-1800 price range.

The SIG is quite front-heavy--heavier than it needs to be.

The Knights' is far more expensive than any AR-type rifle has a right to be. They're great if you want to put it in your safe and never shoot it.

Colt's sets the standard for the AR-15.

LMT, Noveske, BCM, and a few others make top-tier AR-15s.

Stay away from Olympic, Blackthorne, Model 1, and all the "cheap" brands.

I've had good luck with CMMG as a producer of "mid grade" components.

What is your intended use? CQB/home defense? Varmint hunting? Your choice of barrel length, weight, and twist rate will affect the rifle's utility in various situations.

If I was in the market for an AR15, I would go for one with the rod operated action rather than the original gas operated action. The internals will stay much cleaner with the rod operation and much cooler if firing a lot of rounds. You should be able to find a decent rifle for around a grand (+ or -).

Several years ago I picked up a rebuilt military Colt A2 that has a semi auto receiver, bolt/carrier and trigger group with everything else being the original military bits. It works well, no problems even after thousands of rounds and I think I paid about $600.00 for it.

Or, you could buy a kit and build your own. Again, you should be able put one together for under a grand using quality components.

They are great rifles, fun to shoot and "comforting" to own!

Have you shot both rifles? See if that is a possibility. Then choose the one you feel shoots best.

Vice that, play with them in the store. Find out which one feels the best to you and makes the most sense to your body. There will be alot of personal preference involved in your choice.

All mentioned above are fine spoons. Find and use the one that fits you best. Don't worry about what others feel. Heck, I'd have you in revolvers and lever action rifles IF you listened to me ;-)

For $1500 you should be able to find a SAR4800 in 223. FAL design, takes AR mags.

Forget the AR15 and buy one of these....An FN SCAR, they have a few models chambered in 556, of course I'd want the 308 one.

Pretty much everybody. They're the latest fad. And you can buy conversion kits from at least 5 companies.

I don't get too excited about the whole piston AR thing. I have one, a POF. It's boringly reliable. But so are all of the other AR's I've assembled.

Not widely. A good DI gun is just as reliable. If I had to choose only between a Colt AR15 and a SIG 556, I would take the Colt. The AR platform is better IMO. Now if you are going to get an AR I wouldn't spend extra money to get a Colt. I carry a Colt M4A1(just the select fire version of Colt's AR15) at work and it's nothing special. IMO Colt is just a name and not even a great one at that, definitely not worth a premium. Get with someone in your area that has experience building AR's and piece together a rifle with all the exact components you want. You can buy top notch parts for a rifle build for the same cost as buying a complete Colt AR. Hope that helps!

What companies are making AR variants with a rod operated action?

I have a Dae Woo Industries K2 which is basically an AR15 receiver with a rod operated gas system. Great gun & incredibly reliable. Hasn't jammed yet and fires when very dirty. Has a gas regulator up front...when getting dirty, turn the orifice open more for more blowback. Has a setting for no blowback to be used when firing rifle grenades. These guns are pretty cheap but dead nuts reliable. I'll never sell mine. Looks cool too...alot like the FN FNC.

The neat thing about the FNC is that while it is expensive - about $3k - there are more registered full auto sets for it than there are host guns. So you can get quality full auto for about $7k ...

If you go with the Colt M4 (6920), try and source one with an SN of 60,000 or higher. These have the smaller fire-control pins. Personally, I've got a 14.5" LMT (mil-spec/gov't contractor) and couldn't be happier.

If you are considering any of the 14.5" barrel models, be sure the flash suppressor is long enough (bringing the total barrel length to at least 16"), and that it has been properly pinned/welded. Otherwise, it technically a Class III gun (SBR), and very baaad juju if you were to get caught with it.
