In short.... I'd do a track car... Not a car I like... Been around vinyl all my life and I still am very skeptical of wraps... I'll post a longer reply later...

I was talking to a guy recently who has a Porsche RS Spyder in his private collection and he mentioned that there was no paint at all on the car...the entire carbon fiber body was vinyl wrapped. Never even noticed until he pointed it out.

I love having my my work van wrapped!
The only downside...in season I do a lot of driving and it's not recommended to take a wrapped vehicle to the car wash. So finding time to hand wash an Astro Van working 2 jobs gets kinda tough. Good luck! NRD

I had my racecar wrapped. To get a GOOD job it's almost as expensive as a decent paintjob if you don't need bodywork. The upside being you can change the color every couple years if you want. Prices in major cities range from 3000-6000.

I really don't want to pay more than 3 to 4 k on fixxing up the Targa - it will be a track car in a few years. While a compelet resto would be cool, doing it to a 77 Targa is IMO a bit of a waist (Talking 10K to do it right). The car has some small rust spots and frankly I would rather throw money at a 996 and keep the 77 to play in.
I want it to look better than it does now and according to one body shop, sanding out the rust and filling is one thing, the spots can't be retouched, the whole car needs to be painted. Ideas? serious one please ![]()

You don't really want to cover rust with vinyl without stopping the rust....
Honestly for 3-4k you can get a decent paint job of you so most of the tear down. Taking off lights, trim, bumpers, etc. that's how I did mine. Got mine done for right at 3 with fixing some damage, and that was red which is expensive paint. |

Well you could do a cheap wrap, but it would likely only last a few years... What about painting yourself? A single stage paint can be layered and wet sanded until your mistakes are gone.

Mine cost me about $500 in materials plus some DYI time. Definitley doable, even though I picked the most difficult color. If I did it again, I would try metallic grey. I would not cover rust with vinyl though. Sand and prime first.
Project 911 wrap

Aurel,
I checked out your thread and it looks like an amazing project! Turned out great! How much time and money over all did you put into it? If you were going to do it again would you DIY or PAY?

I was quoted about $1500 for a pro to do it, but I preferred learn how to do it myself. Only cost was vinyl, about $500 but could have been even less if I did not waste some. Total time from start to finish was two months, but that was doing it in the evenings. Just laying the vinyl and cutting I estimate about 2h per panel. So 2 fenders, hood, 2 quarter panels, trunk would be about 8h. Add 2h per bumper, that is 12h. I would double that for prep work such as removing bumpers, lights, dismantling rear view mirror, sanding if needed, etc...20h work seems about right. I would do it again, it was fun and rewarding.

Lubey - I'm in the same situation with my '75 Targa. I've done some research here in the PDX area and have determined that I can get it done for ~$2k with a local shop if I do all the prep work. I've seen several other cars in the area that are wrapped and driven frequently, and the wrap is holding up well. I think it makes a lot of sense to wrap a "less-than-pristine" car.

We have a Ferrari in the shop right now that was wrapped. Very hard to tell it had been done unless you knew it.
