"Daniel" by Elton John

It was on the radio around the same time as my older brother was killed. I still think of him when I hear it.

I know it's about a Vietnam vet but it means something else to me.

Have I heard this song 10,000+ times? Yes.
Lump in my throat every single time? Yes.
Best vocal performance ever recorded? Maybe.
Best vocal performance ever recorded with no lyrics at all? Yes.

My Mom passed from a sudden heart attack. She went from cooking and eating dinner to passed away in less than an hour. No warnings at all.

I got the call and went straight to the hospital, it's about a 40 minute drive from my house. Was told that she had passed and helped my Dad and other concerned friends and relatives who had showed up.

After a couple of hours I was headed to the parking lot to drive down to my parents house to hang out with my Dad. I was not in the best state of mind myself, just from the emotional shock and a hard time believing what had just happened.

I got in the car and was trying to collect myself and started the car. The radio was on. There was no disc jockey talking, just silence for a few seconds. Then, "Spirit in the Sky" started playing.

I was stunned and just sat there listening for a minute and started breaking up. I got out of the car, leaving the door open and resting my head in my crossed arms on the roof of the car, continuing to listen to the music. I finally took a big sigh and for some reason looked up into the night sky while listening. Right then, a huge shooting star streaked across the sky.

This was in a fairly large city with a lot of lights. It had to be big to be seen. Right then I knew Mom was fine.

The song now actually makes me feel good and gives me peace.

Heard that on the radio... they said it was the only time Elton edited Bernie... took the word Vietnam out of the lyrics.

I would like to know the story on that one.

Journey - Send Her My Love

It was getting lots of airplay in 1983 when my mom passed away suddenly.

Sarah McLaughlin - Arms of An Angel

Played at my brother's funeral... he was dying of liver failure caused by Hepatitis C and created the playlist himself.

It makes no diff'rence where I turn

I can't get over you and the flame still burns

It makes no diff'rence, night or day

The shadow never seems to fade away

And the sun don't shine anymore

And the rains fall down on my door

Now there's no love

As true as the love

That dies untold

But the clouds never hung so low before

It makes no diff'rence how far I go
Like a scar the hurt will always show
It makes no diff'rence who I meet
They're just a face in the crowd
On a dead-end street
And the sun don't shine anymore
And the rains fall down on my door

These old love letters
Well, I just can't keep
'Cause like the gambler says
Read 'em and weep
And the dawn don't rescue me no more

Without your love I'm nothing at all

Like an empty hall it's a lonely fall

Since you've been gone it's a losing battle

Stampeding cattle

They rattle the walls

And the sun don't shine anymore
And the rains fall down on my door

Well, I love you so much
It's all I can do
Just to keep myself from telling you
That I never felt so alone before

Indeed, Lola is a sweet song.
