The shop I work at makes stuff in the US everyday although it is not finished product. It is still being done but much more scarce and rarely anything is made complete here.

Ive been making wood-based products for almost 20 years; first dissolving pulp then MDF. Both plants were/are leader in what they did/do. Even in this nasty regulatory environment.

The invitation is there, but the product won't be available for interstate commerce. That would be a violation of federal regulation. It's a fight over the 10th and states rights. Basically, the products made in the US tend to be high-value, complex, for commercial or industrial use. Also packaged food, drugs, and chemicals tend to be made in the US. Low-value, simple, or consumer goods tend to be made elsewhere. The last bit - consumer goods - is why most people perceive that the US no longer makes anything. As of 2007 the US was by far the biggest producer of manufactured products. US manufacturing slumped in the Great Recession but has come back strongly.

John, I own a cabinet, shop remodeling co. We make things everyday. But the lumber are often from another country like Mahogany, Beech, or imported plywood like Baltic Birch. Hinges and hardware are made in Austria or Mexico. I am not sure what to make of it anymore. I try to sell some of my older clients with made in So Cal. Most appreciated, but younger folks could care less.

Oh, 2/3 of my work force are also imported.

I was at Kohls the other day and bought some New Balance shoes. To my surprise the wide sizes are USA made.

Does it really matter? The English and the French may have been sing this song and dance 50 years ago. China will be saying the same thing 50 years later. The bottom line is if its a good product, what difference does it make? I like products to be made in this country and try and but them to keep our economy going. We all own import cars right? There are some China stuff I wouldn't buy, but I buy a computer monitor from China anyday of the week over one that's made in Spain or France (maybe a bad example, I am sure they don't make one).

Can you tell the difference between the NB over the made in China Adidas running shoe while running for the bus? Do any of you really think there's a big difference between a shoe that's made by a bunch of south of the borer immigrants (I assume this) over a shoe that's made by a bunch of Chinese in a crowded factory?
