New Unimog ride is done! (lots of photos)

Got this one in a few months ago and my son has had his eye on it since the day I got it. So with his help, it is finally done. Should be a good ride for him, (he is 21, and a great kid, who works hard for what he has!) at least until the first time he has to put fuel in it! When I first got the truck it had a hole in the side of the block where the connecting rod was coming thru the hole! So out with the old and in with the new. A low hour motor we had in stock went in, after we turned up the fuel pump, so now it is putting out about 125 HP. Also we changed over the shift plate in the transmission, so now it has an 8 speed instead of the 6 speed. Also we replaced the brake lines, turned the rotors, and new pads in all 6 calipers. Plus a new gear reduction starter, clutch, slave cyl. and basically what ever it needed. Next we had to replace the whole bed, as the one on the truck was rusted right out. So we rebuilt one we had in stock. So hope to put it on the road on Monday or Tuesday. Should make quite the scene when we show up at the local cruse night with two Unimogs.

After a lot of sand & bead blasting, painting and just changing out bad parts for good, here is where we are on it today!

There's a guy that does (or at least used to a few years back) have one that he drove to work. I suspect not super-practical, but super cool. The one above is a beaut! Now you and the kid can enjoy together.

Sweet. We rode in a Unimog in the Yucatan. What a great vehicle...

That's the cutest truck in a long time. AND when there is one of those killer snow storms it will be the last vehicle left standing - you can pick your buddies up from their houses and take them out for coffee LOL.

You are an awesome father for doing this project with your son. He's a lucky kid and you are a lucky dad to have a son that enjoys working with you. Beautiful Merc by the way.

Question: Is the engine you are running the same basic engine as found in a mid
eighties 300D sedan?or is it a totally different animal all together?. Looks so
much like the om617

Wow..sweet hoist / lift and looks like you have the space to do this type of work. Awesome work and reviving a collectible machine. I am impressed.

Added a few extras to the truck, like hydraulic front winch, new upholstery, and hydraulics for winch and dump cyl.

Got it at Harbor freight about 4 years ago for $500. Goes from 8' up to 12' and can handle 2000lbs.

If you look up "badass 4wd" in the dictionary, I'm convinced a Unimog picture is next to the definition. I have zero practical reason for wanting one.....but I really want one. Very nice work, and what a cool father/son project.

Is that an AC unit on the roof? Looks like a vent fan of sorts.
