Oshkosh 2011

Heading out at zero dark thirty provided the thunderstorms predicted Saturday morning do not develop. I will be in the light yellow Piper Pacer parked out on the flightline about mid field (about even with the ultralight area if I get there tomorrow morning) or further south if weather holds me back until Monday.

Stop and say hello if any of you are going. (I typically retreat to the shade of my wing for the afternoon airshows)

Very cool. I'll make it in a couple of years if everything stays good and I follow through on an aircraft purchase. I'm sure there will be a lot of talk regarding the EPA phase-out of 100LL so please post if you hear anything positive about it! It's one of the factors that's keeping me on the sidelines right now... Don't want to make a purchase and then get stuck needing a $20k STC to change fuel blends.

Weather just north an west of me.... Might head west to an airport south of Chicago, land and wait for a break to head up the Chicago shoreline.

I just finished reading a detalied AOPA report that explained where we are now and what is coming. Bottom line, is it will be MANY years (at least 20+ years) before 100LL goes away, if that soon. While aftermarket companies are investigating electronics to compensate for the loss of lead, they havent found an alternative as of yet for the fuel.

I would live it if that were true, but the latest heard is that the EPA directive is still scheduled to go into effect in 2017... Has this changed? There were a number of press releases issued in 2010 denying that any ban was imminent, but these followed a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking indicating an intent to implement anti-lead standards (which would affect avgas) effective 2017. So it's a bit unclear who or what to believe. Also one has to believe that if Obama wins a second term, this might suddenly and magically find itself on the fast track for implementation prior to 2016. I think if Obama is out in 2012 avgas is probably safe for a while and nothing will actually be done, but an airplane is a major purchase and I want to be pretty damn sure I won't be stuck with an albatross.

Looking at piper arrows and mooneys for the most part, possibly a seminole or Seneca or other light twin as a second choice and if I can stomach the thought of having to budget for tbo replacements on two engines... I definitely prefer twins though. I'd love to consider a cirrus bit they're way too much $$$.

Made it... parted the red sea and sneaked in between two batches of rain up the Chicago shoreline.
Row 78.

This might help..
AOPA Online: Avgas lead producer allays supply concerns

but the way they described it at NBAA, was that IF/When we have a relaible substitute for 100LL, then the FAA will look at implementation, but that would would be for aircraft manufactured from that point on, and it will take years to retrofit the entire GA fleet.

I'm flying out to Wi Tuesday, should be out to Oshkosh by mid-week. It'll be my first time, pretty excited! My FIL invited me, he's a retired Navy pilot and Continental Captain, lives up in the Green Lakes area and says the planes have been flying over his place all weekend...

Looking forward to staying cool and seeing as much as possible!
Anything particular I should check out this year? The FIL has been many times and it would be cool to show him something new, if that's possible...

The NAS event looks perfect considering he's a retired Navy pilot!

Boeing 787 Dreamliner tour will be a must see Friday!

Tim, I am headed up this afternoon to spend Tuesday up there. Sadly via car though. I'll be sure the check out row 78. Seeing that picture of the city and how far you are from the shoreline made the hair stand up on the back of my neck a bit. I have always had a grand aversion to overwater single engine ops. But then again, single engine night flying isn't a whole lot different really. And we all do it...

My Dad thought the same thing. If it was still around would that be like the approach to Meigs' field?

Meigs was on that strip of land in the lake just in front of Tim's strut. It would still be there if it weren't for that crooked ex-Mayor of ours. I am glad I had a chance to fly in there before it closed.

Yeah, I had heard about the forceful closing of the runway, with the planes still in hangars, needing to takeoff from taxiways.

My thoughts exactly. If I'm beyond power off gliding distance from shore I want two windmills turning...

(that's the CFI in me talking)

Seriously awesome photos - I'll make it there one of these years!

I just won a trip up a few hours ago. Dad couldn't make it so I'm filling in (he's even paying for my share of fuel for the flight up!!). Keep an eye out for a good-lookin' bald guy pointing up at the sky excitedly shouting about de planes.
