Scary...

68-ft wave surfed by Maya Gabeira confirmed as largest ridden by a woman as she receives two awards | Guinness World Records

Craig T 10-02-2018 09:51 AM

She says..."In the beginning it looks like I'm shoulder hopping". As if "shoulder hopping" a 68' wave is something to be embarrassed about.

Yeah, I saw that! I think she can be forgiven! EPIC!

Not sure if this is part of the pro tour next year but either way very cool to name it after our friend, Mike.

Equal prize money too - $7,500 to women and $7,500 to men!

My buddy Kirk Bierke and I started surfing in 6th grade 1970 in Redondo and Palos Verdes.
He has shaped boards since 8th grade. he did 20 years shaping/surfing the North Shore Hawaii then met and married a Aussie gal and had some kids then moved to Australia.

His son Russell is a Big Wave Rider now. Check this video of his kid 11/7/18 at Nazare

Bierke said; "This was by far my longest hold down ever! I barely got a breath before the second wave landed on me. Felling pretty sore today, got a good whiplash when I skipped in front of the wave, but no injuries which is good," Bierke told Pedro Mirando, the filmer of the clip above. "Felt like I could barely walk up the beach when I got there.”

Certainly is the master.

Yes he is, Bill.

Thanks Baz.

Phew frightening. Not just a big wave but a messy wave with lots of water in it going by the way it pitches.

Good documentary too.
