Vista installation hosed? crcdisk.sys freeze

About a year ago I reinstalled Vista 64 (Ultimate) when the HDD died in this laptop = an HP dv9000. I replaced the HDD of course.

A couple months later, I started to get freesing when Vista would start to boot up. It went through POST just fine, but the instant the Status Bar and Microsoft logo would start to appear, it hung and stayed hung.
Occasionally, it would boot up.

Starting to get really, really annoying. Last week it took a couple hours or repeated trying to get it to boot.

I found during some searching that it's caused by a crcdisk.sys error of some sort, evident when trying to boot into safe mode... it hangs when it loads that file.

NO solution anywhere to be found, short of reinstalling. Which.... might not work so well, since it does the same thing when booting off the disk.

Anyone heard of this? Anyone found a fix?

Also.. the laptop frequently does not come out of hybernation/sleep mode when opening the lid...

I would install the Windows 7 upgrade, it's much better than Vista... really.

I did one of those "upgrades" a long time ago. it borked everything.
I'd do a clean install before I touched an upgrade disk.

You can't boot from the vista disk?

I would have said boot into the recovery console and disable crcdisk.sys but the recovery console apparently went the way of the dinosaur.

What happened to the Recovery Console?

this thread may have some info for you exact same problem as you described.
Windows Vista crcdisk.sys system won't boot

Frequently, no... I've tried the recovery console and did the "repair" which did not work.
Also ran chkdsk

Read that thread a while back.. it didn't help.

Wolfe,
You can do a "clean" install with the Windows 7 upgrade DVD. If you want me to do it for you, ship the laptop to me and I'll do it in 2 days then ship it back running better than ever!

I had the same problem. I have the same laptop (HPdv9000). It would freeze for no reason. One day it quit completly. New hard drive was changed under warranty. Now every once in a while the touch pad won't work.

1) I start windows Vista from my DVD and select repair, select the command to start the console.
2) in the command prompt I go to where my windows is installed and remane ( or delete) the following files:

\windows\system32\drivers\pcmcia.sys*
\windows\system32\drivers\1394bus.sys
\windows\system32\drivers\ohci1394.sys
\windows\system32\driverstore\filerepository\pcmci a.infblablabla*
\windows\system32\driverstore\filerepository\1394. infblablabla
\windows\system32\driverstore\filerepository\sdbus .infblablabla*
\windows\inf\sdbus.inf*
\windows\inf\sdbus.PNF*

*NOTE: the file with * were NOT renamed (or delete) and it worked for me. In case Ur PC freeze again try to rename all files.

Dave, I'd tried that too.

On a related note, I purchased Win7 Ultimate last night to do a fresh install.

it hangs when it gets to the Windows Loading screen, after "Loading Files"

Fast forward to Sep. 2nd. My H/P laptop won't turn on. 60 days out of extended warranty, mother board gone, estimate $450 to repair.
I purchased a new Toshiba with Windows 7.
I now have an H/P paperweight.

Buy the extended warranty on the Toshiba. Dealing with an out of warranty bad board on a Toshiba Satellite right now!
Currently arguing with them daily in hopes of getting the POS replaced out of good will.

I got 2 year extended warranty.

Art; the h/p doesn't even turn on. I push the on-off switch and the blue lights come on for a second then the unit shuts down.
