If you are going to live to be 108, you are middle age....

+1 to all of the other suggestions. I'll also suggest the Concept 2 indoor rower.

w/o impact the bones will atrophy, so you do need some of that

swimming is good exercise; yoga is good

if you are in PDX let me know and I can recommend a tai chi teacher.

I'm 48. Bikram yoga, cycling, sex, hiking and some simple upper body pull ups and pull ups. I put a bar off my deck.

Riding my bike is by far my favorite form of exercise... and I live is So Cal where weather permits biking 80% of the year (problem is getting my butt out on the road after work).

There is also a Saturday morning Tai Chi class at the park a block from my house.

Also noting a similarity in diet programs.

Atkins
The Zone
Primal
Diabetic

All advocate high protein, high fiber (fruit and veggie) low or no carbs/processed foods.

I have no problem with that diet but my wife is a total beard head rice/bread/pasta etc.

I think my best angle is that I need to be on a low carb diet to keep my diabetic blood sugar under control.

Thanks for all the good advice!

EXERCISE FOR PEOPLE OVER 50
Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side.

With a 5-lb potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax.

Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato bags.

Then try 50-lb potato bags and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I'm at this level..)

After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag.

Walking fast enough that you can't carry on a conversation for 30 min twice a week has also proven to be nearly as good as running without pounding the knees.
All kidding aside, for my money, jyl & m110 have got it right.

Cheers

start with 4 sets of 12 reps each; after that move to the power sex -- eventually you may be able to "get down" to 4 reps in each set

4 sets would take me 4 nights, or 4 wives . . .

Middle age? Are you asking on behalf of a nephew or something?
