Angry Why would someone drive a moped on I-95?

North Carolina law allows mopeds to operate on any street, road or highway, regardless of the speed limit. But the vehicles themselves cannot exceed 30 mph on a level surface, according to Marge Howell, public information officer for the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles.

Two fatal crashes close I-95N lane near Fayetteville :: WRAL.com

Two people were killed early Friday in two separate crashes that shut down part of northbound Interstate 95 just south of Fayetteville. Both crashes involved tractor-trailers, according to the State Highway Patrol.

The first wreck occurred at mile marker 35 when a tractor-trailer crashed into a moped, causing a fire. The driver of the moped died.

Authorities did not release the name of the moped driver and did not say if the driver of the tractor-trailer would be charged.

The second wreck, near mile marker 34, occurred as traffic backed up from the first wreck. A driver of a vehicle that rear-ended a tractor-trailer died, authorities said.

Last Friday I was on the same part of I-95 at the same time.

Years ago, a guy I knew got a speeding ticket on I-5. Limit then was 70. He was on his (modded) Vespa...proud as hell of that ticket, he was...

I have to wonder what they are calling a moped. I know that when I think "moped", I think of those old motorized scooters that you had to pedal to start the motor. They were very slow.

It would not surprise me at all these days if they were calling one of those big scooters that go 80-90mph and are as big as a full size motorcycle a "moped" to sensationalize the article.

In Calif. mopeds are illegal on highways... I think it is 125cc and up is allowed.

Why would someone drive a moped on I-95?

Simple answer, they wanted someone to kill them in an accident so the family can get insurance. Suicide by traffic accident.

That could very well be it.

See pic of "moped" here. It is a little scooter, 50cc I'd guess.

Fatal Semi Truck Wreck on I-95 | Breaking News | FayObserver.com

According to this story, mopeds are actually not permitted on this road.

Mo-ped rider killed in I-95 wreck :: WRAL.com

See the embedded video for what the scooter was.

Anyway, the rider is a fool - even if he spaced out and got on the I95 without thinking, you'd think he'd have woken up and moved to the shoulder.

I love riding scoots, but if I'm going on the highway, give me something with a big handful of throttle...

I don't just want to get to highway speed, I want to be able to accelerate a bit faster if needed. Sometimes the best way OUT of the way is acceleration.

Wow! Yeah, I'm not sure I'd feel safe on that thing on the shoulder of the freeway. My vote is stupidity.

I have been passed by a scooter on I85 at 70mph+.

We have been calling them liquor cycles lately.

I saw some guy on the highway on a moped last week. Something Darwinian about that.

Not my cup of tea, but if the 'moped' is a freeway-legal Vespa, how is that any more Darwinian than being on the highway on any other motorcycle?

If Vmax is about 50-55 mph, I don't think it's a good idea to be mixing it up with cars & trucks doing 55-70 mph. YMMV.

Oh, no argument about that!

All I know is that there are some pretty high hp, Vespa type scooters that are freeway legal. A guy I worked with had one that he commuted on, on the freeway, said it was as fast and safe as a motorcycle, rode it at 65 mph plus.

I have the impression that 'freeway legal' means that that capability is there. But like I said, not my cup of tea!
