get all dogs, cats, and pet weasels, pet honey-badgers out of there - the rat(s) will lie low if they think a predator is around

then use a trap

BTW - that rats may have gotten a tip that you have a rat rod in there

To protect my cars, I decided that the best defense is a good offense. 3 different hazard in 4 or 5 different locations I found that for mice, the peanut butter did nothing. They like good old fashioned cheddar cheese. I keep the traps baited all the time. I also put some glue boards in a few spots near the garage door where the are most likely getting in. At the farthest point from the door I also put some bait pellets.
Try slim jim in one trap and pb in another and see which one they prefer.

We recently had problems with rats as well. We had just bought a house which was empty for some time prior to us moving in. Additionally there was some construction going on near by on another street. Result, 2 rats got into our house/garage and decided to live-in without at least offering some form of compensation. Well that simply didn't sit well with this landlord!

So, I went to bLOWES and picked up two TOMCAT Plastic Rat Snap Traps.
I used peanut butter as the bait. I put one up in the attic area and another in an area under the house. By the time I got home the next day there was an awful smell coming from both places. Rats 0, me 2. I threw away the rats and re-baited the traps with peanut butter. Word must have gotten out in the rat community as I haven't had any activity for either trap since.....

I've been told to use a fresh trap after a kill.

Locals here suggested glue traps. Having accidentally dropped stuff on one....hard, hard to get off it. Provides you a target as well later on.

Funny - my wife is trapping field mice in our garage. Live traps of course. She started walked them up the hill to release them. Naturally, they would come back. She confirmed this by marking them with a sharpie. Now she's doing the mice relocation program. Transports them in her car and drops them off in a field on her way to work.

Sounds like they need to be dropped off in a field with a few feral cats in it.

I bet the houses near that field appreciate the added vermin.

If you are musically inclined and have access to a large magical pipe you could lure it away from the garage and down into the river.

Do you have any Pied clothing?

Alternatively, there are plans somewhere for a large wooden badger.

Actually, I have used rat bait that dehydrates them. They leave in search for water to never come back.

BTW - avoid touching the mice or rats, whatever -- they may be diseased and even if dead, it may transfer either directly or via an insect

Bugger off, Hugo. Back to PARF with you. This isn't the place for that comment.
