No but I will test it tomorrow.
That is partly how I feel, however if I f....ed up his rifle, I'm sure he would want that as right as I want my AC. Ya know?

Dave, another idea I just had is to let him replace the unit. Since it was a handshake deal more or less of friends helping friends, and he's the handy workman type, he might appreciate the option to find a unit himself and install it. Just as you don't want to be out of pocket, he'd rather not sunsidize you upgrading to a new technology air conditioner. Maybe a middle ground is that he finds you a perfectly good almost but not quite new unit that can be bolted into place. That way he doesn't pay for a brand new upgraded unit, but you still get something better than you had at no cost to you.

A few years ago when my wife and I were just starting out and had our first house, the furnace died and we didn't have a pile of cash laying about to use on a new furnace. Our furnace guy took pity on us and told us he knew where to get an almost new unit that was being replaced for some reason as part of a remodel or something. He was able to give it to us for maybe half the cost of a new unit and he probably still made some profit on the deal, so we were delighted.

Maybe there's a local HVAC guy someone knows who has a used unit that's better than what you had that won't cost an arm and a leg that tree guy would be able to buy and install for you and appreciate that you're not trying to take advantage of the situation.

Just spmething to think over.

Ouch!

What about your home owners insurance? If the insurance will cover the damage, then all anyone has to come up with is the deductible. Good luck!

I'm totally about this being fair. We were supposed to be doing each other a favor. I'm relatively new to these parts, and here a mans word really means a lot. I don't want my reputation sullied by being a dick and he wants to honor his word. I think this will work out, but I've yet to hear from him. He said he wants to see the damage first hand. I think I would like to sit down with him over coffee or a beer when he comes over and say.. LoOK however you can get it done I'm fine with it. I just want a unit that is working as good as this old one was. I'm OK with rebuilding it. I don't need a brand new state of the art unit here. Everything I own is used, even my wife was married before. I just want us both to get through this unfortunate incident with minimal damage...... I'll see what he sez. MRM you have become my conscience and I appreciate it greatly.

This is what I'm suggesting with A/C direct. You can get a decent R-22 replacement unit for around $1200 and install for $300. This will be an upgrade, since the new unit will be 13 SEER. But $1500 is extremely reasonable.

james I'm liking the sound of this and I think that number could work for him. If I don't see or hear from him by mondayish I will have done some research for him and we can strike an equitable bargain. Thanks.

The condensor is all that is broken. It will not affect your gas heat one way or another. The evaporator is generally just downstream of the gas heat unit, which also has the blower/fan.

Since only the condensor is broken, only the condensor needs to be replaced. Once installed, it needs to be evacuated and recharged with R-22. Like I said above, about a 2-3 hour job to desolder the old unit and solder in the new one. A good Apartment complex maintenance guy does mine for about $300.

I expect that the tree guy can find an A/C guy to trade services, to do the install on the condensor.
