Still has nothing to do with Time Machine.

You do a backup before the upgrade. Then your phone data is current on your Mac.

If the upgrade fails you can restore to factory then restore the last backup.

For Time Machine to play any part in it you'd first had to have backed up your phone, then run a Time Machine backup on your Mac, then the upgrade would have to have toasted either your phone backup or borked the entire box requiring you to restore from Time Machine.

stomachmonkey 10-13-2011 08:54 AM

BTW, if you've managed to get 5 pulled down and you need to do multiple devices from multiple computers/accounts the upgrade is located in Users/YOUR_ACCOUNT/Library/iPhone/iPhone Software Upgrades.

You can just copy it around to where you need it.

Forgive a stupid question, perhaps: my iphone 4 is jailbroken - can I still upgrade the OS? I realize that will un-jailbreak it, but I really don't take advantage of the jailbroken features. Pretty much all the apps I use are either free or bought, so I don't really care about losing "illegitimate" apps.

gr8fl4porsche 10-13-2011 10:53 AM

Yes, you can upgrade as normal. The new OS will wipe out the previous jailbreak and any associated apps or settings. If you receive an error, let me know, I can help. Just upgraded a jailbroke phone today.

What worked best for me was to restore rather than upgrade. Basically the same thing except the program will restore as new then reload the backup. Takes a little longer but worked better than the upgrade option.

The new jailbreak should be out soon.

So far everything working normally.

But battery drain seems to have gone thru the roof.

I charge every night before bed and rarely am below 50%, usually about 60-70.

Can't remember if I charged last night after the upgrade since the phone was fully charged.

Bout 4 o'clock today was down to about 40%.

May drain it all the way and do a fresh charge.

Anyone else notice a change in battery usage?

Z-man 10-13-2011 08:17 PM

Upgrading now. Taking some time, but that's ok -- I have some time to drink my Kool-Aid (Apple flavored, of course!) :D

-Z

PS: Mrs. Z-man was working on her lesson plans on the MAC, and accidentally overlayed a file. No problem -- I went to Time Machine and grabbed the file from last night. Really, really slick.

dtw 10-13-2011 08:32 PM

Saw it tonight on a buddy's 4. Extremely impressed. So many useful updates and features.

lane912 10-13-2011 08:38 PM

ok
loaded this at work today and have been messing arrond with it.
lots of cool stuff
- notifications
- personal tracking
- the cloud stuff, only if you are into that kind of thing

battery time is going to go down as wifi is cranking all the time, at least it wants to-

Z-man 10-13-2011 08:41 PM

ok - so I sync'd my photos to iPhoto on the MAC before upgrading, and then I loaded them back to the iPhone -- but the pics on the iPhone all come up blurry - extremely low res -- any ideas?

Edit - never mind -- don't know what happened, but it is ok now. weird.

my grandmother used to lick the lense, and then wipe them off on her shirt tails.

jhelgesen 10-14-2011 02:53 AM

os5 is running fine on my 4iphone, did the upgrade last night. Only hiccup was I had to relocate my ringtones in itunes, and some of my foldered applications got moved around.

GH85Carrera 10-14-2011 04:46 AM

My phone updated with no problems. I did my wife's iPhone 4 last night. All of her music vanished from the phone. It is still on the computer so I just have to re-link the folder.

The only frustrating thing I have come across so far is printing. I have a Window computer and a old HP4 laser printer. I had it set up to print any document or email or web page. Now the print command can't find the printer. I will have to figure that one out. It was working fine before.

I lol'd.

Actually, I was still tethered to the MAC, and was looking at the copy of pictures which I moved to the iPhoto folder on the mac. When I disconnected, the pics on the camera roll were fine.

azasadny 10-14-2011 10:41 AM

The upgrade wiped out all of my apps but my 3GS is running better than it ever did before. Fast response and longer battery life so far, but it's just the 1st day with IOS 5...

Did you do a sync before upgrading?

Are you sure you let it go all the way thru?

It reboots several times during the process.

azasadny 10-14-2011 02:00 PM

Yep, I synced prior to the upgrade and it completed. I just downloaded the apps from the phone since I hate iTunes on the PC. So far, so good...

gr8fl4porsche 10-14-2011 03:01 PM

I have been trying to activate my new 4S for almost an hour and a half.

Very frustrating. ATT shuts off the old one and can't seem to activate the new one. Internet is full of people complaining. I am giving ATT a couple of weeks to try out this new phone. If I still drop calls routinely then Verizon here I come.

jyl 10-14-2011 03:37 PM

Got home, my 4S is here, so tell me if this is right:
1. sync my old 4
2. plug in my new 4S and tell iTunes to use the sync from my saved 4
3. sync daughter's 3G
4. plug in the 4 and reset to factory, then sync it to daughter's saved 3G
5. take the 3G to ATT and have them reset it to factory, then add a line and give it to my son
6. whew

Right?

Right?

For 6 just go to Settings->General scroll to bottom and hit reset, chose your options there.

I would watch going to ATT as they'll hit you with all the associated iPhone fees.

You could just add a line and see what phone they give you for free or the cheapest one.

Take the SIM out and swap into iPhone.

Another way to do 6 if the phone is pass locked and you have forgotten or don't know the pass is, turn off phone, launch iTunes, plug usb into PC, push and hold Home button on iPhone and insert USB into phone keeping Home button depressed the entire time. iTunes will tell you the phone needs to be reset.

jyl 10-14-2011 04:48 PM

Looks like my first hour will be spent downloading iTunes 10.

If I swap the sim card from a freebie phone associated with just a voice line, into a iPhone 3G, then tell me if this is right: (1) when on wifi, the 3G works just like an iPhone w/ a data plan, and
(2) when on cellular, it works for voice and texting only, no location services or email or web?

cgarr 10-14-2011 04:57 PM

It looks like I backed up my phone to my iCloud then when I updated my wife's phone it asked for my password to restore it was to my icloud and it added all my apps to her phone along with her apps? Is this possible?

Mine was done on my computer and the wife's was done on her computer.

Pretty much correct. That's how it works when you swap in a Pay As You Go SIM.

But you will need a new SIM for the 4. The 3GS uses a standard size SIM while the 4 uses a micro SIM. ATT store should do that for you or you can simply take a razor blade and trim the 3G SIM down to micro SIM size.

Yes.

Even before the cloud if both phones used the same iTunes Store login you could go buy an app from one phone, then on the second phone go try to buy it again and it would tell you that you already purchased it and allow you install on the 2nd device for no charge.

ATT iPhone 4's do not have a SIM card -- not sure if any iPhone 4's have a SIM card, but IIRC, Verison 4's do.

You have that backwards.

Verizon phones do not use SIMS in the US.

Some Verizon phones like the BlackBerry did have a SIM slot for use internationally.

ATT and T-Mobile are GSM and use SIMS.

Like Scott said.. ATT does, but it's now a micro sim.. It's on the side of the 4, not the top as the case with the 3 series.

porsche4life 10-14-2011 08:35 PM

Guys, take your big sim card, and cut right around the gold chip looking part...

Viola you now have microsim...

And yes, ATT uses SIM, verizon and sprint do not.

jyl 10-14-2011 08:40 PM

Jeez, my 4S has been sync'ing w/ iTunes for close to 3 hours. Copying 789 of 1686 songs as we speak. Either something is really slow w/ my system, or we need USB 2.0.

stealthn 10-15-2011 03:28 PM

Did my iphone 4 the first night to make it the guinea pig. No issues with the install. Not much in it for me, i do like the notification center, but i wish you could set it to always be your startup screen.

Too bd Siri wasn't included, oh well i guess Apple needed something to sell the 4s'

Saw a report today that said the iPhone 5 will be out by April. I know no one knows for sure, but Apple said that the new iPhone traditionally comes out in the spring and since they didnt have it ready yet, under peer demand, they released the 4S now and will release the 5 next spring.

A930Rocket 10-15-2011 04:18 PM

Great! We just ordered a new 4S today.... :(

porsche4life 10-15-2011 05:43 PM

Yes and reports where also out that there would be an iPad 3 in october after the iPad 2 came out in march.

I don't see an iPhone 5 until at least june...

rattlsnak 10-15-2011 07:27 PM

OK, just finished 2 3Gs, 1 iPod and 1 iPad. Total time for all 4 devices from start to finish, including download, was 19 minutes!

Who else has done a 3Gs? I dont have the camera icon on the lock screen on either of mine like they show in the aritcle. I'm assuming that must be a 4 or 4S thing?

jyl 10-15-2011 08:35 PM

My 4S battery is draining fast.

iOS 4.3 had bad battery drain in beta, then the production version was good. I imagine they'll fix this, hopefully soon.

Double click the home button and the camera button should appear.

I found this helpful:

rattlsnak 10-16-2011 08:17 AM

ok, i read through that last night, but apparantly missed that part! Thanks!

Jesset100 10-16-2011 11:23 AM

I got a problem that a search on google doesn't show anything. We all have ios5. My father in law (iphone4) sent a iMessage to my wife (iPhone 3gs) which worked but I (iPhone 4s) got the same message also. We have different iCloud accounts, different email addresses, different iTunes accounts. What am I missing? I don't see a reply to all option.
