World-class Destinations in America?
I can think of 3, ranked in (my) order of relevance:
1) D.C. 2) New York City 3) San Francisco Possibly Yellowstone National Park? Any others?

Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Hawaiian Islands (many options), NYC (Broadway, etc.), that's about all I can think of offhand. Maybe Disneyland.

World class? What does that mean?
Is the Loire world class? Or Tuscany? Bali? Osaka?

As a foreigner that has traveled widely in the States I think the list of cities already mentioned is good . In the natural world though I'd add Bryce Canyon and Zion as uniquely beautiful natural environments. I really don't like the term "world class", perhaps it's because around here (Vancouver), our media and politicians use the term way too frequently.....usually as an excuse to further delve into citizen pockets. Cheers

That all depends on what you mean by world class.
I would far prefer a smooth curvy road in Arkansas with no traffic over driving through New York City.

Agreed but for, say, great Italian food (outside of Italy)? I guess it all depends in what's important to someone. There's a fabulous drive in VA (Blue Ridge Parkway) that probably rivals anything else in the world for beauty, but you can't really "rip it up" so does that make it better/worse even if we're only talking driving destinations? Again - loosely worded questions yield broad responses...

I'd add Boston to the above list of cities.
And Bryce, Zion park in Utah (Drisump beat me to it)... heck all those parks up along the Colorado river. What about Bakersfield!

The places I've run into the most foreign tourists are the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Zion, Bryce, Death Valley, etc. And don't forget the "historic" Route 66 in Williams, AZ.

What do you mean by "World-Class"? What about a visit to say, Wright-Patterson? What about a visit to the finger lake region of New York? Could a trip to Watkins Glen, and a visit to a winery with a stay at a bed and breakfast rival a trip to NYC? Want to watch a sporting event, NYC, Chicago, and LA are great places to watch a baseball game, but a Steelers game in Pittsburgh isn't going to be topped in San Francisco or NYC. What if you're into surfing, rock-climbing, hunting or fishing, or white-water rafting? There are tons of world-class locations in the US (just like there are all over the world), but it depends on your interests.

DC? Really? I mean, it's a nice city, with some important buildings and a lot of history, but world class? I don't know. Not like NYC. I guess similar to Vancouver, the word gets tossed around here a lot with respect to Toronto. I think it's a real inferiority complex, personally, but what the talking heads feel puts Toronto in the "world class" rankings is its theatre (3rd in the world behind Broadway and London). They point to a number of other things like orchestras, galleries, stuff like that, but it's all talk - all 3 levels of gov't keep cutting funding to those things. They're excellent, no doubt, but not on the scale of the Berlin Phil, or the Met Opera, or the Smithsonian.
Based on that kind of criteria, I think only NYC and LA would make the cut as "world class".

Niagra Falls (although the Canadian side is much nicer).
