The reality is..... people (average joes) are willing to pay for low miles
Is it rational? I don't think so. But how else do people quantify or rationalize it? How do they differentiate one car from another?

It won't take someone specifically searching for a mint ES300..... it will be someone that was looking at 'normal' $4000-5000 cars like 2000-2003s with 100-140K miles. Someone that sees value in the Toyota/Lexus nameplate. They see this as a one-owner, no-stories car with super-low miles and see it as a better value for their money.

I just sold a 2001 Ford Focus ZTS with 141K miles, some normal rust (for our area) and a couple dings -- pretty nice but by no means mint -- for $3500 on Craigslist. TONS of calls.

You and I (and the rest of the enthusiast community) don't think like the 85th percentile automotive consumer

One thinks that Kaisen has made his point rather well.

Let us look at usable miles. Lets say the usable life of a car is 250K.

250K - 60K = 190K

250K -120K = 130k

190K - 130K = 60K

Is the extra 60K miles worth another $1500? or .025 cents a mile?

The numbers-only look at things is fine......

But a 60K mile car is also NICER than a 120K mile car. All of the little things, the condition of the leather, the engine compartment, the switches, the paint.

Useful life is part of it, but so is condition
There are exceptions, but usually the lower the miles the better the condition

Current bid is $2760 so it looks like Mark will be picking ME up at the airport.

The only way to tell is look at what has sold in your area. Car prices and types very depending on location. You can look at Ebay for what has sold. Use the NADA guides as most dealers (Chicago) use this. I would look at local auction 'sold' cars too.

Asking price is relative. You can ask any amount you want, it is the sold price that counts.

I'd say $4-5k as well. My former manager at the Lexus dealer offered my customer $2500 trade in for his ES300 with 120k miles.

IMO $4500-$5000 is the floor for just about good condition, original, semi-luxury car (small Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, etc.) from the 90s with less than 75,000 miles on it.

Those older Lexi are an easy sell. If you put it on Craigslist in any major metro area in the morning for $4,000 with the story and a bunch of pictures, it would be gone by nightfall.

I'll gladly send you a check for your item in advance. I'm on vacation however and won't be able to complete the transaction myself. In good faith, I will add $2000 extra for your trouble, as I will need you to assist my shipping agent. He will arrive to pick up the car - just present him the keys and a check for half of the extra amount I've provided - and you keep the extra $1000.

Having helped people who are looking for a $3000 car shop, I'd guess $4-5K. Get on your local Craigslist. Go to the private party section and set the price range to $3000 then show me the car you'd buy for your daughter to drive to school.

With a speedometer in KMH? None of these guys are gonna want that. Too confusing... they want to be able to take it out on the interstate, open it up, and brag to their buds.

Sell it up there.

Why are you bothering this board with this anyway? We don't know nuthin' 'bout no Canadian cars.
