Who is "Gi.elitics.com"? My Mac gave me a warning tonight...

When I came on to this website, my MacBookPro gave me a warning that states that PelicanParts.com is distributing malware from gi.elitics.com.

I've had this computer for almost two years, and this is the first time that I've received a message like this. This is the first time EVER that I have had any sort of virus, or even a mention of one. I have NO anti-virus software, and the laptop works as fast today as it did when I bought it January 3, 2010.

[hello? "Paging Windows users, paging Windows users....Steve Jobs is in aisle 7 showing off a computer that works about 798,000% BETTER than your current pile of plastic and silicon crap..."]

I'll need to check my email later to see if this laptop has sent emails to friends.

Until then...update your anti-virus software, and do a scan TONIGHT!

N!

There are quite a few Virii out there for Macs now. I don't know what to recommend as a A/V for a Mac, though...

I'm certain you have more than a few viruses.

You mean this, it showed up today, has nothing to do with a Mac or PC. Appears to be something the browsers do not like when they look at the site?

I received the same warning. I'm not worried.

Normy, In 2024, if I buy a new Netbook every other year, I'll still be ahead over the cost of a Macbook pro.

The kicker is, my netbook does everything your macbookpro does. In most cases better. Safari is a horrible browser, and about as secure as having a 3 year guard your candy supply. Really, the reason macs don't get hit by viruses, is no one wants whats on them. The are not used in the real world for real world tasks. They might as well say "made by Fisher Price" on the side.

And, at the end of the day, its a laptop. I step/sit/spill/fumble/watch others/step/sit/fumble/spill on/ to be happy I'll be in a spot where I need to keep the thing 14 years to be cost effective.

That is what is going to kill Apple I think. As soon as people figure out computers are a disposable technology, I can't see apple changing quick enough to be competitive.

I have a netbook, and I have a Macbook pro..... The netbook doesn't do anything as good as the Macbook, except be tiny, which I find to be a major pain in the ass.....

As far as your fisher price comment, I'll let the guys that use macs for graphic and software design debunk your theory there....

Oh and if you aren't smart enought to not sit/step/fumble/spill on your laptop, are you smart enough to operate it?

I think what will kill most windoze computer makers is the disposability, but a Mac, a Mac is a durable, quality piece of hardware...

In 12 years having a "quality 2011" macbook pro is going to be like having the best Carriage in the city. Unless your Amish who cares?

Designers use the Mac because they want to and have conned the owners that they need them. A PC will work just as well if it was chosen in those circumstances. And for cheaper.

Are you some how implying that accidents = stupidity? That's the best you have? Case closed then.

Get a PC, and live better.

More than likely, one of the ads that Wayne displays on this site was co-opted by something else. So while "Pelican" is serving it up, It's not the source of the virus.

Inquiring minds want to know...........

Seems you are using those two tired old failed arguments, price point and security by obscurity.

Your $250 Netbook is not in the same league as an Alienware which is in the same league as a MacBook both on price and performance.

Viruses are nothing but code. Anyone can write one for any platform. The hard part is getting it to execute and be malicious which under OS X is a monumental undertaking.

So tell me oh wise one, why is it that before OS X was introduced there were hundreds of Mac viruses in the wild. At a time when Apple was at it's lowest point in terms of installed base.

That since OS X was released there are effectively no Mac viruses. There are 10's if not 100's of millions of OS X machines out there. It's never been a more target rich environment.

Where did all those people who had been writing Mac viruses go?

Also consider why they do it, cred. It's all about reputation.

Your position is that not one of these guys who create viruses think it's worth their time to do something that no one else has been able to?

It's been rubbed in their faces for years but they just choose to ignore it?

Silly argument.
