flourescents and "dirty electricity"

I'd never heard of "dirty electricity" before.

We did stockpile a lot of incadescent bulbs because the flourescents seem to trigger Cindy's migraine headaches.

What's this guy's agenda?

I guess he'd freak his heart to stoppage when around my TIG welder.

I think this explains it a bit.

I believe it.

To put it more simply, imagine that someone blew a dog whistle into your ear 24 hours a day, every day. You can't hear it, but it will destroy your hearing in short order.

How could you go deaf from something you can't here. If it is way out of the natural frequency of the hairs in your ears they will not move much at all and so should not be damaged much. That is the way vibration isolation mounts work for delicate machinery.

one problem with fl. bulbs is the green cast; another is the flicker - both have been mitigated to some extent

you usually do not notice (or did not notice - past tense) these problems b/c your brain adjusts and tunes them out; but back when I was living for 8 months at a time outdoors (doing field studies) I could barely stand to make a monthly run into a town for groceries -- I'd walk in and everything was a ghastly green color, and was flickering -- not very appetizing looking vegetables

eventually, we will all have nice LEDs and can forget about heating a filament, or ionizing a gas to make light

LED's do seem to be the future...effiency in production with have to get the price way down from today though...in the mean time, I have quite a stockpile of incadescent.

I don't have an issue with them. I will however switch to LED as the price goes down, but only b/c of the energy savings.

The issue isn't necessarily CFL bulbs nor is the solution necessarily LED technology. I believe the videos are referring to EMF (electro-magnetic frequencies) and how they affect our bodies. EMF is a byproduct of current flow and all electrical conductors produce it. For example, power line transformers and cell phone towers produce large quantities, but many electric-powered devices closer to us may be more hazardous in the long run.

Dirty electricity is real.
Europe is 220V/50Hz, but the U.S. is 120V/60Hz(same as humans I've heard...)

For a short time I lived in a room about 15ft away from buzzy transformer outside.
On the foggy nights, it was like being inside a ringing bell. The headaches would dissipate on the other side of the house.

Most modern digital Volt-Ohm meters have a led (small light) that lights up when the voltage you are connected to is "clean." No light on means "dirty."
Today, consumer electronics can be sensitive to superimposed frequencies that
travel along your typical 117 volt, 60 cycle power source.
These harmonics and other frequencies can be considered dirty.
I also (but don't know for sure) think that when user voltages get below 108 volts
AC and freqs get below 59.8 and above 60.2 problems can occur. Brown outs, etc.
I have a generator that connects to my home load center and while running, the
flourescents don't like it.

Wrong. Go ahead and have someone blow a dog whistle in your ear for 5 minutes and see what happens to your day.

fwiw, LED also may strobe. On full bright they are stable, but when dimmed the power is generally pulsed to achieve a lower average brightness.

For now, the only thing you need to look out for would be LED back-lit screens (laptops, HDTV...) Running those at full bright should be the least buzzy solution.

You had to post this. I was right in the middle of making home made pizza.
While it was cooking I dropped in on the board to take a look see.

After I read this, I immediately ran to the kitchen. I am now covered in multiple layers of foil with a long cable to earth ground.

Wife is asking WTF????

Thanks!

Flourescent bulbs....

Natural light (sunlight) is between 6800 degrees kelvin and 7200 degrees kelvin. Flourescent bulbs generally operate in the 2700 to 3200 degree kelvin. Since we humans are mostly used to natural daylight, the light at other color temperatures tends to look a different color, yellowish for example. Also, the flourescent light tends to flicker more than an incandescent light. It is probably the (generally)undetectable flickering that causes headaches, etc. The flickering rate will change as the bulb heats up. In extreme cases, the flicker will become noticible to the human eye.

I think the flourescent bulbs are great for outdoor use (floodlights, etc.), but really don't want them inside my house.

I haven't seen any real clear studies on the effects of EMF, tho it is prudent to avoid high exposures.

FWIW, an electric blanket creates a high exposure b/c of the inverse square law

And electric razors.

Any electrical device that is up close and personal has a much higher EMF effect than things at a distance.
