Put 'em on the darn registers.... was at local super wally world yesterday, getting some stuff for the older daughters school project... 29 lanes, 3 of them open, about 30 of us waiting to check out. 3 door greeters.

I went back to sporting goods, bought one box of ammo (could use it anyway) and did my complete check out there...

Yes. Watch people sometime. Head down, no eye contact, definitely no verbal communication is the unwritten rule or else you're liable to get (at best) a strange look or (at worst) mugged.

I agree - All too often it seems like people have forgotten the value of common courtesy.

With some relatively recent changes where I work, there are people (including managers) who seem to be taking cues from their bosses and have eliminated the idea of being courteous professionals. No "please", "thank you", "you're welcome", etc. - just giving orders in the most terse terms possible. Disconcerting, to say the least.

Door greeters make less than cashiers. 3 door greeters is cheaper than an adequate number of cashiers.

local chain autoparts store makes the two old 50 something ladies working the resgisters say hello from behind the counter as you enter... more of a shout hello that generally scares the hell out of me, taking me out of my groove enough i end up forgetting something. the worst is when they shout to the next guy in while your checking out..... too much old lady shouting. ive often though their husbands get them back after shift all shouted out..

been shouted to as ive walked into a certain sushi joint locally by the chef as an entry greeting. kinda hhheeeeey thing! .... im ready for him and shout back most times..

I am a total misanthrope. But I love seeing businesses hire the elderly and especially the mentally handicapped folks. I'm as nice as can be around such people. And I like seeing them working. I couldn't be rude to one of them even if they tried to get a rise out of me. The TSA monkies, however, are a different story.

And if they are there to stop or deter shop lifters; great. If I'm payin' for it everyone should pay for it. I don't want to pay a premium to cover what the thieves take.

At our local Home Depot type store there are two gorgeous young women who look like twins who do store greeting. Both of them are doing the "perfect barbie doll look". I always say "Hi Twin" to whoever is working and they remember me as the friendly old git.

Contrary to what people think, greeters are not there to deter theft. They are there to direct shoppers to the shopping carts. Studies show that customers who grab a cart spend x amount of dollars more per visit and buy more items because they can just throw it in the cart. Don't know the exact stats, but they are out there.

Happy shopping ...

Greeters, I have no problem with, as long as there are sufficient employees in the store to manage the rest of the things that employees manage (stocking shelves, helping people find things, manning the registers). But some time ago, there were employees who were checking your receipts when leave stores like Wal Mart, Home Depot, Costco...etc. Those people annoy me.

True story: I was leaving Home Depot when the Receipt Checker person was there, and there was a line qued up waiting for his official market check mark on their receipts. I walked passed him and out the door. He said, "Sir, I need to check your..." I responded before he could finish, "That's ok - no thank you - not today." as if he were a solicitor asking for money for the local girl scouts, and proceeded to walk out the door. I could hear his jaw dropping on the polished concrete floor as I left. Felt good.

Me too. With my son's disabiities I would love it if he became one of the greeters. It would take a lot of work on his part and on the companies part to allow that to happen.

Some places are more like that than others. I think that small towns and the country are usually friendlier and more talkative than big cities. I'm not a real outgoing person, but I'll make contact, nod or say hello. I just usually don't initiate chit chat or get too wrapped up in chit chat. I suspect I miss out on a lot of interesting stuff that way.

I do find that if I'm waiting someplace, and there are Hispanics in line, that's it's very common for them to start talking and keep talking as if they were old friends.

The normal Japanese greeting when you walk into a sushi joint is "Irasshaimase"
It's sort of like saying "Welcome!"

Kim, I make it to your neck of the woods a lot and if I ever come across your son working in a store there, I'll be sure to thank him and tell his boss he's doing great. Seeing people like him working is one of the very few things this agoraphobe and misanthrope likes about going out.

Thanks Rick. Of cource my son will never be hired because he has long hair and people do not respond the same way to individuals with long hair. My son hates anyone touching his hair. I cut it after it grows an extra 14 inches just so we can donate it to Locks of Love otherwise I stay away from his hair.
