I have a new hobby - make pretend cops.

Yes I'm a community patrolman. I've been doing it for about six months now. Quite good fun, we do training with the police then drive around at night in a community patrol marked car and report things to the police comms center.

We are not into catching bank robbers LOL but are the unpaid eyes and ears for police. The cops are too busy to patrol quiet streets looking for people breaking into cars and vandalising, so they have us doing it.

It's a bit of a laugh; there are 26 of us in the Wellington Eastern suburbs and in six months we have only made five arrests and I've made each of them. LOL, I get out of the car and chase them on foot, whereas the others tend to phone police comms and wait for a police car.

But the main idea is to act as a deterent, the bad guys knowing that a patrol may come walking around the corner in a school at 2am when they are trying to arson the place.

Bill...Good on you! I dunno if there is a Fenix light dealer down there...but considering what you are doing? You'd fall in love with a Fenix TK60...

A Huston cop who posts on the Bullitt Board gave it a plug. Absolutely an amazing light. I swear, I could drive by it! Bad guys would freak when lit up by one.

The local sheriff does something like that too...

I'd do it, but I'd spend all my time hassling jackass drivers...

Good on ya, Bill. Do be a bit defensive minded while running these folks down.
We don't want to get a sad news post about a bold pelican getting hurt doing the good work. Some of those flashlights have really stout cases, if needed for more than light.

We have had to form a neighborhood watch recently to get it across to the low lifes from a near by park that our area is not easy pickings for their prowling.

Cheers Richard

Wow, thanks for the kind words guys. It's quite good fun and the time goes fast.

Actually I'm already a fan of the Fenix and have a TK30. There was a methamphetamined driver a few weeks ago who was getting a bit agressive in a car park. So I shone the Fenix in his eyes for a minute or so while we were yelling at eachother and he didn't even blink. Gulp.

A fisheries mate of mine runs CERT http://www.cert.co.nz/content/4/ over there out of New Plymouth. He keeps some interesting products that may help you out

Bill, be careful running people down in the dark. Many years ago my best friend was a night patroman for the PD. The PD got a call about a prowler in a neighborhood. He responded & and located the guy hiding in some bushes. The guy took off & my friend chased him down & had him up against the side of a building & and told him to put his hands up against the building. The guy would only put one hand up against the building. My friend pulled his revolver and told the guy to turn around. When he did, he had a pistol too. Luckily enough he gave it up when my friend told him other policemen were going to be there in a few more seconds.

Thanks for the good advice Marv. Good to hear from you John. How's wife, son, car and fabulous Brisbane? I'm fairly careful about who I have "situations" with as we have a number of Somalis around here and they carry knifes. Most of them live in the next area from me (the old neighbourhood) and I didn't want to patrol that area for that reason. Disclamer - not being racist, being survivalist
