Where To Find? (32+ inch Chrome Round Bar 5/8 Inch Diam Hollow)

Okay, I am going to complain about something trivial.

I have a bathroom. (Yay.) It contains towels. (Uh huh.) The towels hang on a very pretty chrome double towel bar, with one rod further out from the wall and lower than the other. (So?)

Well, people - small, ill-disciplined, brainless people - are in the habit of removing towel from bar by pulling vigorously down on the towel end. Not carefully lifting towel off the bar like other people - big, wise, careful people.

This puts tremendous leverage and stress on the mounts for the towel bar, yanking the screws right out from the plaster wall. And yanking plastic anchors. And toggle anchors. And expanding moly bolts. Anything short of a long screw securely tightened into a solid wood stud is going to be yanked out.

So, my studs are on 16 inch centers, and my pretty chrome double towel bar is 24 inches long. No problem, I will just get a 32 inch pretty chrome double towel bar. (Simple.)

Not so easy. I can't find one that matches the four other towel bars and the towel ring in the room. So it will cost like $200-$300 for the double bar and maybe $600-$800 for the whole deal. (Arrgh.)

But wait. (Lightbulb.) All I need is two 5/8 inch diameter, round, chrome tubes, ideally hollow, over 32 inches long. (Yay.)

Guess what. All my Googling skills can't find a source for this. (Shamed.)

Any ideas? Some obscure industrial source for this stuff? I'm about to stick some rebar in there and call it a day. (Aggravated.)

What is the price for taking some cheap metal tubing to a chromer?

$21 for brass tube
Order Brass 330 Tube in Small Quantities at OnlineMetals.com
A part like that should not take too long in the electroplating bath. Try to find a friend with a Harley that wants some other parts chromed.

More than buying two chrome 36" towel rods, cutting the rods to 32", and throwing away the ends? I'm kind of thinking about that.

The line that is in the bathroom does not include a bar over 24", so unless I modify this bar to 32", I'd have to replace everything in the room, which means throwing out more than just two ends.

Sorry, I know this is trivial. I just think it is weird that in a world of 16" centers, the standard dimensions for towel bars are not evenly divisible by 16.

That $600 seems like an F'in lot for a towel bar.

Maybe look for some suitably sized breaker bars?

It would be three long double bars, a short single bar, a towel ring, a toilet paper hanger, and three door hooks. They all need to match, except maybe the hooks, that's gonna be more than $600 for decent stuff. Unless I can get longer bars and reuse the existing ends.

I would look into getting that 6 foot 5/8ths brass tubing and chrome that to match the rest of the stuff. Even if it is a little off, I think the savings would be worth it. The towels will be hiding the bar anyway.

Just tell the kids that if they break the towel bar then they don't get a towel bar unless they fix it themselves. More money for the car!

The kids would be happy without a towel bar. Leave towels in the floor? Sure, dad. Not take a shower ever again? Cool!

I'll check out the chroming option, thanks.

I just got some small stuff brass plated for a client. It ran 58 bucks. So it really should not cost you that much more then that just to have the two pieces plated.

What about using a section of shower bar? They usually come in chrome and are expandable sections. I'm pretty certain that they would be 32" or longer. Also you may want to look at curtain rods. Same thing, expandable and 32" or longer. Hope this helps.

Damn I know a guy that has just what you need. They are chrome breaker bars. But I think he just sold the last one.

The cheap way would be to go and get an extendable chrome curtain rod and use half. Or you could just hooks for kids towels?

I feel your pain.......

About 25 years ago we moved into a brand new house. My father in law had made a wooden coat hook for my son's room (son was 2 yrs old) which I put up on the wall, low enough so that he could hang up his coat. The very first day in the new house, my son decided that he could use it to do chin ups and ripped it out of the brand new wall!! So, I had to repair and repaint the brand new wall and then relocated the coat hook into the closet where it was screwed to a wall stud. I guess it's just a guy thing!

Chroming something will be outrageous. It is a very polluting (and so expensive) process.

Which is why I'm suggesting stainless, 6063 Aluminum or Titantium
