Second, you find a large copper Belgian roasting bowl, clamp it in a spindle and rotate it slowly with an asbestos glove while having at least three blow torches just "kiss" the bowl from the opposite side.

Third, crush the roasted beans by hand with a mortar and pestle until they resemble coarsely ground pepper.

Fourth, boil a sufficient quantity of "bling h2o" (the purest of waters), and substitute the used panties of a young Japanese schoolgirl for the filter in your coffee machine. (These can be bought in vending machines throughout the Ginza—but PM me if you need the address of a stateside supplier.)

Finally, drip the coffee through the panties, and serve immediately in a pre-heated Meissen china cup.

Another vote for the Aero Press. So simple yet works so well.

For the record, I own an Aero Press, a Gaggia lever machine (the Pavoni copy), an Expobar, an Isomac Gran Macinino grinder, and a Rancilio Rocky grinder. Not the fanciest setup in the world, but pretty darn good for home coffee brewing. The Aero Press makes coffee that is every bit as good as my $1k machines. It's not exactly the same as espresso in terms of flavor--it reminds me more of the coffee from that $10k Clover machine. Highly recommended.

Although I think Dottore has a superior method, my schedule doesnt allow for the asbestos glove / copper kettle method. AND, I think my wife might object to having a supply of panties on hand from schoolgirls (domestic, Japanese, virgin or otherwise).

Therefore, I found a Bodum french press travel mug. Perfection! I get my dark sumatran (beans) and am able to take a fresh cup on the way to work - AND use our hot water on demand tap to replentish throughout the day.

If I'm in a hurry, I rely on the local non-franchise coffee shop for my red-eye. (Road America people, please patronize the Exchange Bank in Plymouth. Leon is a great guy and runs a wonderful shop).

I was Told (so long ago I don't remember who....) Never ever use boiling water for Coffee, Always always use boiling water for Tea.

Is French press the best way to go or are there any other methods I should look into?

PS, As it is my wife thinks I'm a coffee snob for grinding my own beans.

Spring for the Bodum stainless steel French Press. Its bloody fantastic. First, you cant break it, the pay back in replacement flasks is really quick. Second, its insulated.

French Press tips. Put in your required amount of coffee (conisntent measures is really important- especially with your own grind). Then add a dash of cold waterm ake a paste. Then add hot water off the boil. Stir. Sprinkle just a little more coffee on top. Stand with the lid off for a couple of minutes. Stand with the lid on for at least 5 more. Plunge and pour.

We grind our own but frankly prefer a brand called Kimba from Italy. Its cheap and high quality, we buy it by the trunk load from a wholesaler, along with bags o'beans, about once a year.

Espresso, Press pot, French Press, drip machines. Let it steep. Geeze where am I the ladies room of the local hair salon?

Here's how you do it. 8 table spoons of 8 O'clock coffee, 2 cups of water. Put the Perk-O-Lator on the fire. Come back in 30 minutes a perfect cup O' Joe.



Now quit your yappin and get back to work. Next thing ya know you ladies are going to tell me you drive some fancy German sports car.... Oh wait.

My morning coffee.... Roll out of bed at 5:30 and walk down stairs to kitchen put cup of water in microwave. Take shower. Get dressed. Take cup of water out of microwave and put heaping teaspoon of instant coffee, cream and a bit of sugar in cup. Gulp it down while still standing at the sink. Fill same cup with grape juice and swig it down. Fill same cup with water and swig it down. Head out door at 6:00 am and drive 45 minutes to work. Repeat next day.




At work coffee..... Walk down to break room Bunn coffe maker and dump some cream and sugar in Glock cup. Fill 1/4 full and swirl cup around thus dissolving cream/sugar. Fill rest of way up. Walk back upstairs to desk. Gulp down coffee when it cools enough to avoid burning mouth. Repeat as needed.



Weekend coffee..... Roll out of bed and crawl into hot tub while wife starts coffee maker with her "special" flavored coffee. Get dressed and drink one or two cups of wife's coffee while watching news then head out to the shop for some quality time. If there happens to be a fresh snowfall, take a cup of coffee out to shop with me.

Bodum makes a good, inexpensvie French Press. This is what I keep in my desk drawer at work and use here. At home I have another one but often use a drip maker since it has a timer on it and I can wake up to coffee that is already brewed and ready to drink without having to wait.

Good quality water (I personally like my well water) and FRESHLY ground beans are key. Don't pre-grind. Ugh. If you can take them out of the grinder and drop 'em right in the press as soon as they're ground, so much the better. Then clean your grinder regularly otherwise you get old coffee grind slag sitting there that mixes with the new fresh stuff.

Never been there and likely never will go.... That said, other than the Army mess hall coffee in basic training, I enjoy drinking just about any coffee so long as it delivers my caffeine.

Of course I also liked/preferred Schaffer light beer in college and am perfectly happy with my nightly ritual of Kamchatka vodka/Diet Coke.
