Tundra frame recall, not sure what to think

ENGINES, like the GM engine Rick referenced, are rarley SAFETY issues under recall. If and when they are, the US Government will dictate their process.

Remember Ford's Explorer rollover recall? Replaced everyone's tires, free.

Remember Toyota's gas pedal recall? Brought 'em all in, free.

Remember Toyota's engine sludge epidemic? Not directed by the government to recall, thousands of customers felt screwed.

Easy to "do the right thing" when you are required by law to do so.

Actually, I think this one may be a "service program" not a recall. I'll check, but I'mpretty sure this one was not mandated.

Works for me.... Back when this happened to my '99 Tacoma Toyota Tacomas Breaking in Two I made out like a Bandit IMO. I pocketed some cash with the buy back money and had enough left over to buy my current used '02 Tundra Limited.

Yep, turns out this is not a mandated safety recall, it's a voluntary extension of the frame warranty.

In all seriousness though, If I was in the construction trade and needed a daily "work" truck, I would likely at least "think about buying" a plain-jane "Ford" F150 to toss rocks in the back of and to crawl into with muddy boots/dirty work clothes. Tundra's are too pricy/fancy/nice to beat the snot out of IMO.

Who said? Toyota's original recall was for 110K Tundras in 20 "rust-belt" states. The "expanded service campaign" (announced a year or so later) extended that effort to include all 50 states.

FWIW, I do not view them as "do no wrong" (after all they build the Prius which I hate ), but my '99 Tacoma was 100% trouble free for 100k miles as has been my Tundra that I have put about 40k on (it is now at 160k+). The Tacoma which was likely only worth 6k was bought back by Toyota for 12k+ even though the frame was still plenty solid. IIRC, Toyota was not mandated to buy those Tacomas back, but they did.

It's hard to argue that they're do-wrong with frames rusting out from under 10 year old trucks. If they weren't willing to correct their quality control mistake I wouldn't touch one of those trucks used unless it was from AZ. While none of their cars interest me, I happen to think that they build the best trucks around based on driving a variety of both domestics and imports. The domestics have dramatically improved in recent years, but they still have a little work to do (my opinion).

Tim, I went by the dealership and snapped a bunch of pics of the old frame. Hell if I see the problem but whatever. There is some rust there but nothing that would scare me. I'll post the pics in a bit.

It's my understanding that they look for a 6mm or larger perforation in certain regions of the frame,if they can poke a hole that big it fails. I have not confirmed this though.

My '06 Taco has 75K on the clock and hasn't missed a beat save for a brake caliper issue (fixed by the dealer cheaply). In truth if I were a working man Id drive the F150. But the Taco is the perfect homeowners truck.
