I surprised no one mentioned this before...

My brothers friend was stranded in Mexico for four days while BMW sent him a new transmitter (fob or whatever)... and I think the price was more like $500-$600.

Yep. Porsche keys are very expensive even if you don't have a button.

I've rented a few new cars and trucks lately, it says right on the key tag that if you lose the key it will cost an average of $300 to replace it. (Generic warning for all of their vehicles).

Silly gimmic. Similar to other posts, what happens when the fob dies, the car no longer senses the proximity of the fob, and the car won't start? Stranded by a $3 battery.

my 57 buick ignition key just turns the power on and off. the actual starter "button" is the accelerator pedal. to start you have to press the accel pedal about half way down to engage the starter. couldn't get it started the first time I drove it. turned the key and nothing. thought I had a dead battery

Had in on an '08 BMW that required a key to open the door and you had to stick the key in the steering column beofre pushing the button. If you have to go to all that trouble you may as well just twist the key. In that car it was a ridiculous attempt to keep up with a fad.
My 2010 Murano - no need to ever take the key out of your pocket. If you're near the door you can open it, and it adjusts the seat and mirrors to your setting as you get in. Just push the button and the engine starts. I like it.

If you have to use the key AND the button, that's just stupid. If you keep your keys in your pocket and push the button, then that's pretty cool.

If it's a Chevette you use the key to unlock the decklid crawl inside and place the fob in the glovebox reciever and it will turn on the car. I have 96k miles as a salesrep driven car with the same battery. It's really pretty damn nice to have. Figure 8-12 starts a day and the thing still works.

I drove my truck today and it has 187k miles on it and has been abused from day one when I bought it new back in 2002. The keyway ignition is starting to go away. Sometimes I need to pull the key out and retry it to get it to start.

Yes, If all of my cars worked off of a fob like my che'vette I would be happy. Oh another cool feature is that both of my cheveys automaticly turn the headlights on as needed. My wife's Jaguar needs to have that!

jmaxwell, I didn't know about the quarter trick. Glad mine didn't get stolen since I left it out with the top down all the time - except when the weather was bad.

My wife likes the smart key since the door you approach can be opened, but the other one stays locked. Nice security thing as far as she's concerned.

There is one in my Elise. Just to start it. Push it to stop and you will clash the starter motor against the gears. Dumb. Seems out of touch with Chapman's values.

That is a STARTER ONLY button. Not a "start/stop" button and its doing exactly what it was designed for. It was NEVER designed to be pushed once the engine is running!

The dumb part is that if anyone pushes it in when the engine is running, like they are NOT supposed to do, they will destroy the starter gears and gears on the flywheel. Then they get to pay for their dumbness...

My corolla does that, about the only modern feature it has... :D

But yes it is very nice, I don't really think about lights when I am driving it, the car has them on before I need them.

I don't like them, MiL has one & she likes it. I prefer the 2 way remote start I had installed in my Honda. I hate the non-mechanical turn signal switch in our new Explorer at work.

Most still have a mechanical key for the door and a passive RFID reader in the car for the ignition.

So even with zero battery in the fob, you'll never be stranded.

The Corvette, as Jim pointed out, has a mechanical key for the rear hatch, then pull cables to 'pop' the doors, then slot for starting the car.

Only if you know how to use it properly and do not push it when the engine is running! :)
