I regret not "getting in the game" when I was in my early 20s (having way to much fun for that at the time ), but now I'm at the same stage. Congrats Greg...it's a great feeling isn't it!!!

Nice Greg!!

It's a beautiful part of the state that you live in.

I have about 5 years left if all goes to plan, even though I just refinanced to a much lower rate, I'm hoping to pay it off way early than the loan schedule.

Can't wait to share that same feeling, oh and about those property taxes!!!!

I had big plans at being paid off by 50, I'm 45 now. Cars are paid for. The house will need to wait due to buying a business. That and the decline of the economy, wife getting ill and a few other bumps in the road.

We're knocking down 14-16 payments a year and with our new loan at 3.8% it will help.

Darkbeer, POST PICS!

It's on 4/10ths of an acre, 3 acres out here would be heaven!

The people who say this are also the people who say "man I wish I would have had more fun in my 20's instead of wasting that time paying on that house, wife, etc."

yep. Paid off the 30 year note in a little over 8. As was mentioned above, we never really "own" our homes, we just rent them from the county.

43 and debt free. now, to fund the retirement account in the next 12 years.

You're probably right Mike...I wouldn't trade anything for those "lack of" memories either!

ps: I did get "serious" once I hit the big 3 oh, but never stopped having fun along the way. The journey is the prize...

We own ours halfway so between that and ~4% interest, payments are very small. We could continue to pay it down to nothing but with the market being down, we're doing better by buying investment properties. We've been able to come out flowing about $400/month positive by buying carefully. If at a later point prices come up with rent staying the same I'll focus more on paying down on what we have.

Paid our's off a few years ago, In 2005. I was 48 and planning on retiring before I hit 50. The popular thought back then was to just put the money into the market. I just figured that paying off the house was the same as using that amount as a fixed income investment. I was paying 5% at the time and I couldn't get that guarantied rate anywhere else.

Glad I did. Both the paying off the house and quitting work at 50.

Paid mine off for the 2nd time last year. Then started putting myself under water by remodeling. It had 20 years of wear and tear was looking pretty shabby.

April 2011

Today. Tore off the old sunroom and deck and added a 16x18 sun room and 16x26 concrete deck.
All without moving the barbeque grill!

I always chuckle when I hear "Free and clear". My house was paid off many years ago but every Monday the county/school district takes $100 out of my pocket for taxes.

Enjoy,
