x-country drive. gun rule changes i need to know about?

i am going to AZ. i plan on taking a Glock. couple of loaded mags in a locked bowcase, the pistol in my luggage with a cable lock thru the action. that should keep me out of trouble with the law right?

i'm driving SOLO. last time i went unarmed..and that desert is friggen dark and scary.

meeting Lowdy993 and my very well armed brother there..so once there i should be good. it's the long haul there i am wondering about. leave it all at home?

what's changed with the law?

Isn't AZ a free for all WRT guns?

I know that here in TX, anyone that's legally able to have a gun can carry one concealed in their car without a CHL.

I dunno about the laws, but I'd do what you're doing too and wouldn't think twice about it...

When I go anywhere and take the bullet throwers, I make dammed sure to NOT do anything to cause police suspicion or break any traffic laws so there would be no reason to get stopped. Check your lights, make sure to signal, complete stops where required, etc and no one will care what you have.

Arizona

I lived there and Arizona is an open carry state.I have a CCP there as well.Do not stop on I-10 at night at any rest areas.I-10 is usually fine during the day,but if you are taking I-8 to San Diego south of Phoenix keep your eyes open. There are drug mules day and night and the scouts are armed and there are armed spotters on both sides of the road.Just another normal day in Janet Napolitano`s home! Don`t worry though, she says it`s safer than ever.I personally would have a weapon in my car and clip handy.won`t do you much good in the trunk.Az.law says if you are stopped and asked about firearms, advise him you have a weapon. They are used to hearing that. If you have any doubt, just ask the first policeman you see as you enter each state...

As I understand it, as long as the gun is legal where you originate and where you end up, you may travel through states that are unfriendly to firearms (perhaps not spending the night in such states would be a good idea).

California Law

Vash,

Technically I do not think you are legal in CA unless your clothes bag locks or you store your bag it in a locked trunk of a car. The gun needs to be fully enclosed in a locked container. A combo of a gun lock and an unlocked container inside your cabin will not qualify.

IMHO in CA for self defese, you are much better off throwing a rilfe or scattergun in the vehicle where it is easily reached and putting a magazine or a few rounds in your pocket.

HANDGUNS

California Penal Code section 12025 does not prevent a citizen of the United States over 18 years of age who is not lawfully prohibited from firearm possession, and who resides or is temporarily in California, from transporting by motor vehicle any pistol, revolver, or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the person provided the firearm is unloaded and stored in a locked container.

The term "locked container" means a secure container which is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device.
This includes the trunk of a motor vehicle, but does not include the utility or glove compartment. For more information, refer to California Penal Code Section 12026.1.

I have questioned the local PD and also the county sheriff and they have both said the "locked container" can mean the gun can be laying open in the trunk since it is the locked container or the gun can be in a locked case such as rifle/pistol cases and they can be behind the front seats such as a 4 door pickup. Note the specific mention of the "no glove box" and that was inserted to prevent the stashing of guns in gang bangers cars in L A and other bad areas as the passenger can easily open the glove box and out the gun comes.......

Indeed, John, if it is in a locked trunk, it can be just the gun. I don't think Vash has a trunk though, last time we heard about his car he was driving a Truck and before then a Suby wagon. Maybe the truck has a lockable cap, then it would be fine.

Like I said, handguns are a hassle. A nice wood furniture carbine like a lever gun, mini 14 or a short barreled shotgun make a good travel gun as well and look inconspicuous.

You're definitely good to go in AZ. The law here is: if you can own it, you can carry it openly or concealed - machine guns, bows, switchblades, suppressed pistols, etc. You only need a permit to carry concealed in a place that serves booze. No open carry in those places. No duty to inform cops and they don't seem to care one way or the other. I love AZ.

is this a joke? driving from the bay area to AZ is not x-country!

during our move from the bay area we've probably stopped at each rest stop at least once. Didn't have any problems with the ones on I-10 in the desert, though we were in a motorhome with a 75lb german shepherd...
