before the ONLY night hunting allowed was raccoons with hand held light not attached to any type of vehicle or boat. and if you were caught with a firearm loaded or unloaded in vehicle while spot lighting you were in a heap of trouble with the law.


havent read the ruling yet per se, but i do know my zeiss/orion gen II night vision scope will TAKE US OVER AND THRU THE FUN BARRIER going after them bastids. what i heard was its shotguns only, but then i heard its centerfire also. so i dont know who or what to believe until I READ THE RULES! either way that damn night vision scope will attach itself to anything i have with a picatinny rail and the FUN BARRIER WILL BE BROKEN AGAIN IN SPADES shooting those lil bastids before they eat my lil deers/lil elks/and lil antelopezzzez'.

So would a mountain lion, a bear or any other wild carnivorous animal that was large enough to. This is what wild animals do and unlike you, its nothing personal. They are only trying to survive. I lived for two years in rural NV.....Sasha was able to stay clear. Two months in suburbia they got her....sneaky quiet bastards. They are pests that need relocation or better yer eradication. Animal control has had the budget cut....against the law to trap.

The worst part, is her replacement....damn PITA is NOT like her and is doing an extended puppyness that is worse than the terrible twos. 6 months old and still crapping in the house.

Correct. They are generally solitary but they will hunt in packs when conditions are harsh and larger prey has to be taken. I see one coyote as a curiosity, a group of them is simply dangerous and should be avoided. They know how to work together to take a large animal and you can't always cover your back.

There is data that shows that coyote behavior is changing and unusual survival techniques have been witnessed in urban animals. There is also some debate that a new sub-species is forming leading to a larger bolder animal that will more often hunt in groups for success.

coyotes in Portland, Oregon seem very well behaved, and ride the mass transit trains without bothering others - there is a pic of video online somewhere

coyotes have expanded their range eastward (all the way across the continent) after we got rid of their natural control factor, the wolf

if you want to keep the coyotes in control a wolf pack will do the job nicely

Let me correct some potentially dangerous things posted above:

1. a rabid animal may or may NOT foam at the mouth - do NOT rely on that

2. keep your distance from all wild animals, living or dead - they may well carry various diseases and some could be transmitted a short distance ( a flea's hop) even if you do not touch the animal or its carcass

3. there is one known case, IIRC, of a coyote killing a human in North America (which makes them ore dangerous than wolves, I guess) - a woman

4. coyotes can show some limited pack behavior -- that is coordinated attacks by several members,
usually family groups, so be aware - they are known to have attacked pets and babies (in LA)


do NOT put out poison or mechanical agents that could harm a pet or a child - call animal control

check your state laws re shooting -- and if you are in a city's limits discharge of even a pellet gun may wind you up in jail

My little one just turned four. They play out on the deck all the time. I know where the den is. If it was public land, my neighbor and I would have gone and get us some coyote meat. My gay neighbor is not going to put up with loosing another dog. he wants to go get them because animal control would not do anything. Lucky for them, it on private property. These bastards come during the day, because they know everyone is at work. I told my wife to never let the kids out of her sight. We started to see them when my little one was 6 months old hanging out there one afternoon.

Let me see. My kid, or the fooking coyote. Gee, let me see and think about that a little more.

You didnt read my post correctly. I never said not to kill them. I'd have no problem breaking out my Army issue Colt 1911 if need be. What I said was in reaction to someone else saying that they would poison them in a way that causes a slow painful death. There is a difference...Now you go think about that for a while.

Dessert for them in the morning. One was distracting the dog and the others high and wait, then they try and go for the kill.

Good luck with that and when you end up killing your neighbors cat or someone else's dog who happens to eat the poison you left out than you can deal with that as well. I can tell you that if my dog died because of you trying to play exterminater with poison you wont be a happy man....trust me on that one.

Fascinating animals, really. I have nothing but respect for them. That said, it's been a generations long Higgins family policy that they are shot on sight. No ifs, ands, or buts. I've killed literally hundreds of them, the greater majority of them for profit. We used to get anywhere from $50 to $150 for a decent pelt. I even built up a special rifle just for that duty, it was so profitable.

Calling them is a real hoot. It's fun, and sometimes a bit unnerving, to purposely put yourself in the role of the hunted. It's not always a coyote that shows up, either - we've had cougar and black bear, on the big end of the scale, show up as well. Fun times.

Urban / suburban coyotes are a whole different animal. My "shoot on sight" policy cannot always be strictly adhered to, but I try. My neighbors, when my wife and I first got married and moved to more or less rural Snohomish County (darn near 30 years ago now) used to be really cool about it. Most of them shot the damn things on sight as well. It's just what you did. Then, one day, we got annexed into the city, and the fun was more or less over. Coyotes didn't go away, but there was no more unlimbering the .220 Swift in the wee hours to dispatch one of the little bastards. At least not as brazenly as I used to. It was time to go into stealth mode.

About that time, I learned of what its developer calls his "cat killer" load. The perfect urban / suburban pest control load, if one happens to be a hand loader and bullet caster. The recipe is simple - using the the heaviest mold you own for a given caliber, cast a pure lead bullet. It has to be dead soft, pure lead. Big bore rifles with long barrels work the best; .44 mag, .45 Colt, or .45-70 in lever guns (.357s will work in a pinch as well, but don't go smaller), or the big single shots. The idea is to load the bare minimum charge of Unique that will get the bullet to exit the barrel every time. About four grains works in a .45-70 with a 540 grain bullet. About two grains for the .44 mag or .45 Colt with 300 grain bullets. They go maybe 300 fps. They make less noise than an air rifle...

Calling suburban coyotes can be fun, too. I know this will sound like a load of b.s. to some of the interwebs experts who know everything, have done everything, and have been everywhere, but I swear it works. Like a charm. Hell, even some of the commercial call manufacturers make little electronic callers that will make the necessary sounds for this (they have made the traditional dying rabbit tapes or CDs for years). Anyway, simply go to the toy store and get yourself a little stuffed dog. We used Snoopy just to be a bunch of smart asses. Stake him down, tie a string to him, and hide off in the bushes, pulling on the string every now and then to give him some "life". Play your electronic caller, loaded with the "lost and forlorn puppy" sounds. Shotguns work best, because it's going to be close and fast. I am not making this up - it works like a charm.

Anyway, lots of respect, but no sympathy. If you see them, you have a problem. Just like rats, but bigger. Shoot 'em if you can.

Somehow this morphed into a kill them or don't kill them thread. I think were all on board that if they encroach on your property or present a danger they should be taken down end of story, but it should be done in a quick humane manner. (I still prefer my 1911 or 357 magnum) Deliberately trying to bring about a slow painful suffering death is a little twisted. Thats all I'm saying.
