proper disposal of anti-freeze
Just drained the coolant out of the Miata. So what's the "proper way" to dispose of the used anti-freeze ??

Bordeaux blend.
Your household toxics recycling center (for motor oil, batteries, CFL's) should take them. Some service stations also recycle vehicle fluids.

The "Gray Water' that goes down your sink. Not the street drain that goes to the river. I have no idea if it is illegal but the water that leaves your house in the shower drain is a good.
If you don't like cats... leave it out in the open container in your backyard for at least a week. The laws very and it was crazy that on Christmas day, with the temp in the 30's, we had all fireplace burning prohibited. Where do you go and live without all the brazillion laws for living? Saving the planet is all good but is it just the U.S. nailing everyone for not being real green? |

the water that leaves your house in the shower drain goes to the sewage plant - it is not a good way to dispose of antifreeze, nor is the gutter (stormwater drain)
take it to a FLAPs, or to the city or county waste transfer site |

![]() ![]() In my area there is a hazardous waste 'day' every few months. Also, a few of the local racetracks collect oil/brake fluid/antifreeze, so I bring it with me when I go to the track. Edit: Did some searches online, and some cities/sewer authorities claim the sewer system will break it down. It should be diluted, by pouring it into toilet and flushing, preferably during the day when more water is flowing through the system and will dilute it further. Surprised me. Of course, I would NEVER do that with a septic system. Last edited by dad911; 12-31-2011 at 07:36 AM.. |

My local FLAPS won't take it. So I have a gallon sitting in the garage.

They don't take it here either. The proper way per the city of Denver is to dilute and flush.

In OKC we have a free hazardous waste disposal waste site. Every few months I go there with all my anti freeze, oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, paint and light bulbs that have mercury in them. Any of my household hazardous waste is taken there. It is free (well my tax dollars at work) and quick and easy. The best part is my favorite Cajun lunch place is around the corner.

Pour it down your sink. That's the legal way in Colorado.

I would mix it with cat litter to solidify it, then take the "solid waste" to your municipal dump to see if they take it...
