Drop the motor in and run it like that! Sorta cool looking in a crude way.

Preparing for NASCAR concours?

Dualies in front......isn't there a rule about that?

Sounds like your list is getting out of hand, Tim. Sure sign of a slacker.

Update on my race car project:

I don't know where my time goes, but I am nearing completion of my engine which is a L31 5.7 vortec out of a 2000 GMC van.

studs

I made a fixture to pull the pressed in rocker studs as I am going with ARP screw in studs and guide plates.

I had to then machine the rocker stud bosses down 3/8".

I had to make a flycutter for my Bridgeport out of some scraps to take a skim cut off the heads. Tried it on an old jumk head and it works good but takes forever.

Hope to finish the heads soon and get this thing buttoned up.

Tim, I see you are in NW Ohio also, where are you located and what track will you be running at. I'm out in the country on a farm about like yours (saw an aerial pic in other thread) near Findlay/Fostoria.

I gotta say, i'm impressed with the progress of this car, and would love to see it run in person. I used to run dirt karts and loved every minute of it.

What is a cast crank, piston and stock rod combo reliably max. RPM rated to?? If allowed, how much more $$ would a nice used forged/billet set-up have run?? I understand you're not going NASCAR racing but I could see myself get nervous if sustained past 6K or so.

Gee if you are going to all this trouble for a dirty lefty, might as well ditch the Chevy bodywork and dress her up in a faux Gulf 917 body so they know what they are in for

Pavulon, Tim is most likely running a class where the cylinder heads are spec. If so the engine won't rum past the 6k ish range unless he takes out the 3.48" crank but then it won't come out of the hole. 4" bore x 3.48" 101.6 mm x 88.4 stroke

You could use a 302, 283 or even a 265ci crank at 3" and it will rev higher

Being the cheap SOB that I am, I decided to build this engine to start with after reading several articles praising these "newer" truck engines as being fairly solid at around 400hp. It was from a van my employer owned and the block did not need any machining. I will likely only have about $2500 in it.

My stock crank and stock pistons may hold up..... they may not. I have heard both positive and negative stories about them. I hope to end up with gearing that keeps me at about 6500 max.

I have two more blocks one of which I may build as a forged 383 if my cheap motor does not work out. With block machining, forged crank, forged pistons and good rods etc, I would be looking at spending somewhere around 4-5K which I do not want to do starting out.

I am about 15 miles west-southwest of Bowling Green. I will be running this car at Oakshade which is west of Toledo near Wauseon. Any time you want to stop up for a visit to my shop, let me know. Many years ago, I raced pavement carts for a season after hanging up my motocross boots due to injuries.

After two airplane annuals and a family trip to Texas for a wedding, I am back on the race car engine build. At 46, I am slowing to crawling pace on my projects.

Scorpion rockers, .015 headgaskets, comp cam beehive springs, hardened pushrods w/ guide plates and milled vortec heads installed.

Crawling pace is better than no pace. Trust me on that one.

Looks good.

I was wasting time on Google earth and I think I found your place - house, shop, pond, runway and what looks like a dirt backstop. I had no idea there was so much farmland in Ohio.

Yep..... I am out in farm land...... Kind of bland, but I would not trade the freedom for anything. With all the surrounding farm ground, flying in good weather in single engine airplanes is safer than driving to work IMO. If the engine ever quits, there is always a field to land in vs houses, trees, mountains or water. I lived in the city in my 20's and wasted a good chunk of my life partying. While fun for awhile, I enjoy life much more doing my own thing on my own property.

Yep, lots of farmground in Norhern Ohio with a few small hills where I am. Where Tim is, it is flat as a pancake for miles and miles, with only deep drainage ditches for contrast.

Tim, keep the progress coming so you can run the car this year, and I can see it run, but trust me, I know about slow projects, i'll be 48 in a few months and recovering from a bad (17 broken bones) car accident.

You might enjoy reading "The Good Life" by Scott and Helen Nearing.

Although they were card-carrying communists in the 1930's, they made a farming existence in mountainous rural Vermont from scratch. Farming techniques year round, self sufficiency, and breaking up the day to different routines/obligations.

Only a partial endorsement. Book is mostly apolitical.
Discard as needed.

If time allows, you should stop by for a visit. I am 30 minutes or so from Maumee.
