Pool Table overhaul

Some months back, there was a thread on buying & fixing up a pool table...I advised against the do it yourself effort, saying a good table mechanic has skills
and experience.

Well, here's a thread on AZ Billiards site of a top level mechanic refurbishing a Brunswick Gold Crown one. A six day job!

No need to read the entire thread...just the opening post and the pics should give a clue.

Cool. I have a GC 3 or 4 I believe. I can't remember what the guy said when he took it apart to move in to my basement of the new house. It's in storage there as I don't have room to set it up. Keep thinking about selling but having a hard time parting with it thinking I'll get a bigger space someday.

Definitely hang on to that Gold Crown...and please hire a good mechanic when you plan on setting it up again.

Actually, "felt" is a slang misnomer...it's cloth.

Don't hold me to it, but I'd say that's a GC III.

Paul, you know any that has ever built their own table? Always thought that would be an interesting project.

I'm due for a new one. My cheapo Mizerak dont cut it anymore. But cant blow 10Gs on the antique Brunswick I want .

Never heard of anyone making their own...Diamond seems to be surpassing Brunswick (made in China these days) in popularity among the serious players set.

Diamond and new Brunswicks are priced about the same.

You might check out NJ dealers to see if they sell Diamond Tables...I'd opt for the professional 9' model.

Also, the mechanic in the opening post is a diamond dealer...his phone is on the truck door. He goes all over the country. With luck, he may be in your area soon?

Here's a link...the Diamond "pro am" 7' "bar box" is used in the Western BCA championship matches...nice playing table, but I really prefer a 9'. I feel claustrophobic on a bar table these days.

You should be able to find a nice old Brunswick Gold Crown for under $3k

Of course, this is still my "if I won a lottery" table...a classic 1940's Brunswick Centennial..love it's art deco look. This pic is an amazing restoration..love the way the aliminum pieces were polished. Looks like a Diamond table light above...they leave no shadows.

BUT...the diamond does play very nicely...possibly even a bit better. It just isn't as pretty. It would have to be a pretty heartless wife to think that a beauty like that Brunswick wouldn't add to the home decor, while she might make that arguement about a diamond professional, which is built based on pure function.
