I think the problem is people assume it's the letter O substituting for the number zero. They way I look at it. it's an abbreviation for zero. So it would be 'O, short for zero.

I mean who says it's nine on the clock? No we all say nine o' clock.

Sometimes "ohh" (being monosyllabic) just works/sounds better.

Porsche 9-ohh-1/4/6/8.
Corvette z-ohh-six.
3-ohh-8 caliber.
4-ohh-5 freeway.
4-point-ohh GPA.
etc. etc.

My cell phone number has 5 zeros. I know the difference between O and 0, but will use "oh" just to speed things up when telling people my number.

One of the area codes in Phoenix is 602. The vast majority (even the educated) say, "six oh two."

You need to study the grammar rules regarding this. For instance, there are several 911s amongst us, but not all are an S model. For plural in the S instance, one would say 911Ss. That's correct way to do it. However, an editor may prefer 911S's or
911 S's for clarity. The editor might also tell the writer to simply avoid the word.

It is acceptable if it provides clarity.

But you are correct in that nine times out of ten the apostrophe is not called for.

And if I really wanted to be grammatically correct, the above sentence should have said, " But you are correct in that for nine times out of ten the apostrophe is not called (or maybe appropriate). We just don't talk that way any more than we use Old English.

"I went to the ATM machine." (do these people not know what the M stands for?)

"Just call the 1-800 number." (it's an 800 number... everybody knows you have to dial a 1)

Hmph....I "could care less" and sometimes I "could not care less", and rarely I "could care more"...mostly, I just don't care!

ps: I think I'm guilty of just about all of these "pet peeves" on occasion, sometimes out of ignorance, sometimes out of apathy... doesn't really matter....it's a "mute dot"

I've always thought it would be better to be at

"The wrong place at the wrong time"

than

"The wrong place at the right time"

Well thats a cultural thing isnt it. My SO, when she hears, say, an American commentator refer to the year "two thousand nine" screams "AND nine" at the television.

Ive given up pointing out that they cant hear her.
