Over an hour to update an ECU??

this is what the Subaru Dealer told me re my 2010 Forester

I specifically asked if they had to exchange any mechanical parts and he said "no."

seems odd, tho it was a warranty recall/upgrade (so I was only out the hassle of dealing with them)

It might have required a check-ride and in some cases the drive has to have certain parameters (lenght, speed, etc..) that require it to take a while. 30 minutes for update, 30 minutes for check-ride, etc...

It could also require a direct download of the flash file from Subaru, as opposed to loading it from a local file. If the file is a gig+, it could take some time.

It can take up to 8 hours to re-flash an BMW ECU at the dealer. No joke.

BTW - this was to lower emissions on repeated cold starts (which I avoid anyway) - my plan was to let them do that while I got the free oil change they had promised me done. Turns out they tried to charge me $36.41 for the oil change so I told him no.

Tony Callas (Wayne's favorite mechanic) told me he has a soft power up sequence rather than simply attaching the ground cable to the battery. Might take a little time.

I just left mu 2008 overnight rather than wait. The service guy told me about 45 minutes to get it done and then tried to upsell me a bunch of stuff.
