Jesus. When I was young, we still called them "beggars".

The reason why the future student body gravitated toward Cougars is pretty clear: Area collegiate power BYU uses the Cougar as its mascot and enjoys an enormous fan base of area residents and those who follow the Mormon faith (BYU is a Mormon institution).

I almost ran to Snopes, just too weird.

My H.S. mascot was an "Appleknocker." To this day, I still don't know WTF that is... We also have Centralia High School, home of the Orphans. Cougars seems a big step up.

I have all of you beat with a crazy mascot names. At my high school the mascots was....

The Poets

I kid you not. Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery Alabama. The poets. Bart Starr went there and they were State champs many times.

The Pen is mightier than the sword! Was an actual chant in the grandstands

Pretty soon mascots will be banned all together. They will be considered offensive to someone so no on will have them.

Here we have the University of SC whose mascot is the Gamecocks. You can only imagine the bumper stickers around here.

Eastern Michigan University changed their mascot name at least a decade ago from "Hurons" (an Indian Tribe) to the "Eagles".

My HS was the Fordson "Tractors", there was a partially dismembered hulk of what was one on the premises rusting away outside.

Herrin? Cobden? Anna? I know some Appleknockers from that area, but I can't remember the the town the school's in.

This Cougar thing is a ridiculous reaction to a fairly recent pop-culture term that will eventually go away. They should take a longer term, more mature view IMHO and name the team the Cougars.

Cold as it is up in your area I imagine you're ready. I probably won't go back to PA to work till April. Some of my buds still working up there told me it was 7 degrees up there the other night.

Had a big stink here in Florida a few years ago about the Seminoles. They wanted to make them change the name but the real Seminoles came forward and supported the mascot name. The Seminole indians have a good relationship with the school and did not consider the use of their name offensive.

The Appleknocker avatar resembles some hayseed bumpkin with a pipe holding an apple. From my experience in high school, I can tell you the pipe didn't have tobacco in it.
