update - what is value of 1972 2002 tii?

I am tasked with liquadating an estate that contains a 1972 BMW 2002 tii. The odo says 36501. I don't know if that's right, but the interior is perfect and seems to reflect that mileage. It is slightly modified. It has fiberglass hood and trunk, and there are duzu fasteners used to hold the hold down. I have not opened the hood to see if the fuel injection is still there. It has some old school Recaro seats which are perfect, and some very old school lap belts. I do not know if the motor or suspension has been modified. It has sat since 1992, but the owner's lady friend reports that was excercised once around the block at least 10x a year. Its an interesting car, but I know jack about BMW's. I would give the interior a 9.9/10 and the exterior and 8/10. The paint does have a few nicks, and there is a bit of bubbly behind the left wheel well.

The car is at my office in Michigan, near Ann Arbor.

What should I be trying to sell it for?

Also, the crome and glass are 10/10, and I have the original wheel and the factory manauls.

Shouldn't a 72 have round tail lights?
Fun cars, I would like to have one.

I was just reading a 2002 site that said this:

"1974 introduced some major body changes. The most noticeable are the rear tail lights and bumpers. The "roundtails" are gone and in place are the square tail lights. High impact bumpers were added to meet U.S. federal regulations. The interiors are upgraded with completely new upholstery and simulated wood is added to the gauges. The front grills are now black plastic. The turn signal lever is moved to the left of the steering column, where older models have it on the right hand side."

This car has square tailights and plastic grills, but it does not have high impact bumpers, the turn signals are on the right side of the wheel, and there is no fake wood anywhere to be seen.

This car is an enigma. The square tailights are very curious. But it is a 1972, this site verifies that this VIN is a tii and it is a 1971-1972. Vehicle Pre-Purchase | The Tii Register

I wonder if somebody updated the taillights?

Is there any indication of a rear-end accident? Maybe the inside of the trunk has welding where it shouldn't be?

I think the car was rear-ended at some time 1974 or later, and the owner decided to replace the "low visibility" stock tailllights with the "better visibility" bigger taillights on the later models, to try to prevent future accidents.

Either that, or the owner was a bit safety-conscious...

On the front end, I don't think the plastic grills/kidney will fit on an early model (or vice versa). The upper belt-line aluminum strip is missing as well.

Looks really clean though from the pictures.

I agree with some of the others that this car looks like a mix of body parts. Tail lights were round until '73, I think, and on the early cars the grills were not black, wheels are from, I think maybe, a first-gen 320i - what's that, an E9, maybe? Also the chrome strips around the belt line have been removed. Would be interesting to know what's under the hood, and whether a 5-speed has been transplanted in.

A couple of good sites for checking these cars out - if you haven't already found them, are 2002 AD and BMW 2002 FAQ.

From what I can tell, the prices on these things can be all over the map. It's possible to find them for SC or even Carrera kinds of money. I think that's ambitious, but that's just me. Good luck with it. They're cool little cars, but nowhere nearly as well engineered, or as solid, as our P-cars.

The VIN may be a '72 but it sure doesn't look like a '72. It's definitely had body work as the beltline trim and side markers have been deleted and the tail panel is from a later car. Does the nose panel have an opening for a snorkel? It would be on the passenger side of the nose panel. If it does, the nose has been replaced as the Tii's didn't have this piece from the factory.

Some engine bay shots would be nice.

I agree, that thing says accident damage or boyracer owner. An original tii might be worth 10K to 15K easy, but that one might be quite a bit less, say 7K ish

Well, the fellow who owned it and loved it made the changes. He has passed now of cancer, so we cannot ask him. I am told that it was not accident damaged, but he just liked the newer lights. Another thing about this guy is that he had a lot of $$. When I say a lot, I mean a lot. His family owned several Michigan dealerships and I don't think he would be involved in a salvage car. He would just scrap it and move on. For context, perhaps we can all remember another time when Porsche owners were "updating" longhoods to impact bumper cars. This car is really pretty clean. Do you think I would be crazy to ask $10k for it?

ask the $10k

sounds like you have a fiduciary responsibility to the estate if not a moral/ethical one to the deceased

try to find the records - sounds like a guy who would have compiled them

any rust that can be seen?
