So, what was that notch in the stock for? There has to be a hunting story with that!

Indeed! It's shipping tomorrow, will post when I get it. David has been wonderful handling this restoration. Notch, I have no idea, I'll have to ask my Grandfather, it was his gun that he gave to me. Hope to enjoy it in a few weeks up in NH.

it's back home and just perfect, everything about it feels right, confident. Thank you David, so happy with it! It will see some time in NH at the end of the month.

I need to touch up some rust also - can you confirm the "steps" for me? (barrel)
Just use some fine steel wool with the Brownells Oxpho-Blue on it, and... you're done? that's all? |

Nice work! I have an old old old Belgian 10ga shotgun that could use some cleaning/checking. It says Patented 1883 on it. Is it worth going through it since i will never shoot it or should I just clean it up, polish, oil the wood? Would you be interested in work like that?

The instructions are on the Oxpho bottle, use the cream not the liquid. Use 0 wool and light oil to clean up the rust. Degrease with thinner then put the blue on with 0 wool. Use nitril gloves. Leave it on for 15 minutes then wipe once, one direction with a paper towel to remove the excess and even out the cream. Let it sit and dry over night. Use 0000 wool to burnish. Re-apply and repeat 4-5 times or until you are happy with the finish.
A Belgian 10?? Cool! I work on everything, but double guns are my passion. 1883 would be damascus barrels which of course you should not shoot. Belgian doubles, unless high grade, are hard to justify the expense of restoring unless there is some historical or sentimental significance. It's your call. PM me if you like so I may get some details about it. Shaun doing this for you was a pleasure. We have been friends a long time and it was just nice to be able to do this for you. Thank you for your confidence in my work. |

The gun looks great. I am a big lever gun fan. Please ask grandpa about the notch. I sure wouldn't put a notch in my stock unless it was a real memorable hunt or occasion. A bear maybe, a big buck or a mountain lion? ![]() G |

I have a .22 with five notches in the stock. Was told my great grandpa was keeping tally on a rabbit hunt with it.
