Bought a GTI, sold a 911 today
After much internal debate, review and reading of posts I pulled the trigger on this 2010 GTI today. CPO car, 13k miles, autobahn package, loaded with everything but nav. Guy at the dealer owned it, sold it to buy the Golf R. It's been tuned a bit, up about 30 hp, has a euro lower valance/splitter to go with that he picked up at the factory. It's immaculate. Very excited.
![]() On a sad note the 82 left to with its new owner today as well. Purchased in 05, was a great car. Is a great car. This is a pic from my trip from Houston to Seattle when purchased. Time to get started bringing this 72 back to life as the gold track beast will be up for sale in a few months. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Shame you sold the 911, but I think you will probably enjoy the GTI on a daily basis....

If they made rear wheel drive GTIs, there'd be no valid reason to buy any other cars ;-)
Practical, well appointed inside, incredibly mod friendly, gobs of torque, big trunk...but they are FWD. Ultimately that's what got me to trade mine for a Cayman S. Great choice ! you'll love it ! Just make sure to change the oil more often than factory intervals on that turbo ! Last edited by Deschodt; 02-08-2012 at 09:56 AM.. |

Depends...Not really if you need rear seats. Very much so if you need 2 trunks ;-)
First thing I thought when I got the Cayman S was that it was lacking in torque vs. the GTI. (I had REVO software, my GTI was making gobs of torque at low rpm, almost like an electric car) I guess my point was, at its price point, if a GTI was RWD it'd be the easiest smartest choice in the world. I can't think of anything else that easy to extract torque from, that nicely finished, that practical to sit 4 people and luggage, that well handling...for under $25K new. I had hopes for the new Golf R too, but they had to make it 4wd and it's still FWD biased, and $35K ! Ugh. I should emphasize I really like the current GTI. Don't mean to criticize it's FWD-ness. I just mean that if it were RWD, it'd be the bargain sports car of the century. Last edited by Deschodt; 02-08-2012 at 09:59 AM.. |

I had a 2007 GTI (which is VERY similar to the car you bought). I also have an '86 911 coupe. IMHO, there is NO comparison. The 911 is a FAR better drivers car. I autocrossed the GTI once, and it really doesn't handle all that well (for a front driver it does! not compared to the 911).
Even for a daily driver, I would not give up the 911 for a GTI. I'd rather put money in to the 911 to keep it up and make it more comfortable (like a new stereo). Congrats and to each their own! I certainly won't be telling my 911 this story! ;-) Al |

Not to worry, I still have an 83SC with a 3.2 swap and other goodies and a couple of projects in the wings. One is the 72 in the pictures that was "updated" in the 80's to resemble a 74 Carrera. My goal is to re backdate the car and get it mechanically sound again. It has not run in 10 years. It also has a 3.2 that was mated to a 4 speed sportomatic. I will convert it to a 915 and have most of the parts necessary to accomplish that task.
I needed a fun, good gas mileage dd that I can occassionally track if I sell the gold car. Most of my track time is spent in my formula vee or our chumpcar miata these days anyway.

Hear all you guys saying he shouldn't have sold the 911...
Maybe yes, maybe no. All I know is that the GTI is infinitely more comfortable and practible for the street! A vintage 911 is not even in the same ballpark. I have a 2006 GTI that has been re-flashed to the tune of about 250 hp and nearly 300 ft-lbs of torque. The car never misses a beat. Easy to maintain. I certainly never fear parking it anywhere and walking away for a couple of hours. And still quite fun to drive. As quick and capable as a 911 on the track or auto-x course...of course not. But around town, the GTI to me, whips the 911's butt hands down. Luckily I didn't have to sell my 911 to purchase my GTI. So I get the best of both worlds. All I know is that when I crave comfort and no muss....it's the GTI every time. ![]()

Wondering how the GTI compares to a Mini Cooper S.

It's more grown up...you look foolish putting a stripe on a GTI ;-)
Seriously, you can fit 4 people "AND" luggage in a Golf, nor "OR" ;-) Much bigger car. It's got more torque, way more torque with some software... Interior is better finished... The mini is more of a gokart, the GTi more comfortable... I miss my GTI more than my mini... not to say I did not enjoy both, I did... Actually I miss neither right now, I prefer the Cayman S ;-) |

Not sure about the S but my gf has a 05 mini. It's a go kart all right but also feels cheap inside, rattles like a can filled with coins and is hell on Seattle streets which look like we just emerged from WWII and were the ones getting bombed. I would love to drive an S to compare but her base car with the auto is a gutless POS and after putting 40k on it she doesn't like driving it anymore.

This past year, rented a Mini Cooper S while visiting my Mom.
Got the chance to drive one for one week's time. Best and most fun rental car I've ever had. Yet when I returned to the GTI when getting back home, it was apparent to me that the GTI was just an overall better car. Better built, more comfortable, less gimic-y interior, etc. About the only car I'd replace my current GTI with is the new Golf R Would like to give a Cayman R a chance though.... ![]()

I owned a Mini and have spent a lot of time in my bro-in-law's GTi, the GTi is superior in every way. Much more solid feeling, better performance, exponentially nicer inside. No comparison in my mind.

We sold our 07 GTI last spring. It was a great car. Best seats and steering wheel of any car I have owned. (14 Porsches and many others) Fantastic DD, with great mileage. We also flashed ours and it had tons of power everywhere in the RPM band. In 60K miles I replaced a tail light bulb, a fuel pressure switch and brake pads (at about 50K miles). I only tracked ours in the rain, and it was fun passing all of the GT3s.... ![]() I am actually considering converting the Cayman S into a second race car and getting another new GTI as a DD. Cheers
