Road & Track had an editorial about the worst cars to buy about a year ago. The editor claimed that a ten year old European luxury car was the worst buy a person could make. They're expensive to maintain and rather fragile to boot. Sure they're good looking and very cheap right now, which was the carat!

Bottom line, be sure to have AAA, and be sure to pay out big bucks to get it fixed.

That's what the article said, not my opinion, FYI. Thought I'd just pass it along.

Thanks Al, that is probably the voice of reason I need to hear to balance things out. Like I said. I'm gathering info and not making any choices any time soon. Just in the planning stage here, seeing if it makes sense for me.

Another vote for an XK8 here. I drove a friends recently and was very impressed. Very like a DB7 but a fraction of the price.

Al
I read that article, it was based on paying a mechanic to fix your car. If you DIY it can be a good experience, maintenance is often much less than a new car payment.

What are you really jonesing for, Dave?

There are soooo many more reasonable, cool cars other than a Jag for MJ; and I grew up with Jags, our family car was a Series II.

Pay no attention to Whipped Pup: He is too damned smart and wholesome to have an opinion in these matters

Paul, Suggestions? I'm open. MJ has to have an automatic because of her back, one of the reasons the S car no longer lives here. I'm open to 928's also. She likes the retro T-Bird but they are still in the high teens and low 20's and I think over priced frankly.

What am I jonesing for? A 911. I really miss my car. An SC 3.0. Coupe. Black n tan. Sun roof. Well cared for. I would do silver and black also. A 2.7 S would be nice also. I would have to let her keep the PT and sell my van. I only have room for two cars indoors. Outdoors is not an option here with winter and all. That might be the best solution really. I don't need a lot of space myself these days. My equipment would fit in the PT. Drive the pt as a winter car. Hmmmmmmm......ya got me thinking. Ya got me thinking.

Used Mercedes, BMW or a Lexus/anything other than a Jag. If I had a spare slot for a Jag, weekender, no issues.

I still think that one with a V8 swap and a manual would be awesome!

Several of you guys keep recommending tossing a Chevy engine in there. Do YOU have one?

It drops the value of the car in HALF immediately. Very, very few people want a bastardized car like these become. I have owned one and know what its like to get rid of.

Again... do YOU own one?

Since nice XJS Coupes are $5-6K, you're saying you can buy nice V8's for $2500-3000?

I know someone who had to damn near give away a fairly clean xjc that had been the victim of engine conversion.

Then maybe that's what he should look for!! Sounds like they're great deals.
Best of both worlds, reliable, powerful, and cheap/easy to repair.... and cheaper to boot!
