Misbehaviour At The Easter Egg Hunt

The Associated Press: Aggressive parents force egg hunt cancellation

An annual Easter egg hunt attended by hundreds of children has been canceled because of misbehavior last year. Not by the kids, but by the grown-ups.

Too many parents determined to see their children get an egg jumped a rope marking the boundaries of the children-only hunt at Bancroft Park last year. The hunt was over in seconds, to the consternation of eggless tots and the rules-abiding parents.

This story is sad-funny.

We've put on an Easter egg hunt at our house every year of the last 15 or so. Parents get sent outside to hide eggs. They get devilish. Some eggs get half-buried. Others are painted in camo and concealed in the bushes. Others are placed high, or low. Then the kids get to hunt. Big kids have a limit. Usually there are still un-found eggs an hour after the hunt starts. There's like 20+ eggs per kid.

A parent has occasionally given their kids help of the "'warmer, warmer, colder, colder" variety. I don't think anyone has shoved another kid, punched out an egg-hoarder, mugged a toddler for his egg basket, or otherwise misbehaved. We'll have to increase the alcohol quota and see if something entertaining can happen.

You can see this same (mis)behavior at a soccer or hockey game when the parents are there, watching their kids... Sad, really...

I love the kids of today. One wanted to help me on a small job so I told him to be here at 7am and we'll put some tools in the truck. I told him after that I'd stop and buy some breakfast.

I left at 7:10 alone. Didn't give him a cell no., where I'd eat and no job address.

I wanted to work alone anyway.

I bet he thinks I'm a dick. 30 years ago if I had a helper they were parked in front at 6:50. 40 years ago I was just starting out and knew damn well I needed to be on the job ready to work at 6:50.

I didn't walk to school 7 miles uphill both ways in the snow, but I did walk to school or to the bus.

I don't get today's parents. I think it's peer pressure. My stepson wasn't raised by a "helicopter" me or his mom. But he drives his kids 3 blocks to school.

My mom never saw me play baseball once and never made it to the kart track once. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother, though. I think the moment the kids left the Scotch came out.

Don't paint us all with the same brush. I can say for sure I've never been guilty of any of the sins in that article, or this thread. Sure, I want the best for my kids, but I'd rather they figure out how to get it on their own. Most, if not all, of my friends with kids have a very similar philosophy.

I wish I could say it was different in other states/cities/towns.....but.....it's not

No direction, failure (immature) parents, living through the kids instead of raising them. Then leading their own along the same path.

Now video games have to explain that you don't always win, heaven forbid that a mom or dad had to do that.

*****, did I just say that,.....better get back in my cave

A couple of years ago, when our kids were ages 2 and 4, we went to the LA county Arboretum for their Easter Egg Hunt. The parents rushed the eggs and gathered them all up for their kids. It was a game of getting as many as they can for their kids. My older kid was only able to get two and the 2 year old only one. That's after I grab one egg right before a parent who had three in her hands. I put the egg on the ground behind the rock so my little one can get it himself. those parents are the ones who start fights in their kid's games.

A little 15 year old girls told me a long time ago how her parents curse out the principal and all of her teachers. that's how she think problems are solve so she continues with the tradition. Fruits never fall too far from the tree.
