Bicycle Partner hit by car this morning

I am again training for the Houston-Austin MS150. We were 3 miles from the end of the ride and my buddy was tired. 2nd to last hill (Rek Hill for those who know the route), he's going pretty slow up the hill. I was slowly riding, waiting for him to catch up. I look back and he's behind, cresting the hill. I look back again and there are cars at the side of the road.

With him being tired, I thought maybe he'd fallen over. Nope, clipped by a little old lady. I circled back and checked everything out. It looks like she had a blow-out and it pulled her to the side of the road. It was just the side mirror that hit him; he spun into the shoulder.

Knee scrape and a raspberry on his butt. The mirror must have contacted his elbow, because there was a big bump there, but no scrape or blood. Something happened to a couple of fingertips. Bike was fine.

A bystander took me to my truck, while the woman called her son to change the tire. I picked him up and took him to the town where we bought some additional first aid stuff. He had a painkiller (A Saint Arnold's Lawn-mower) and we peroxided his wounds and bandaged him up.

Basically a little freak accident, but you gotta be careful out there!

Scary thing is that his being careful or not would have made no difference. Just random luck, good or bad.

Thread title should be:
Why Bicycles Should Not Be Allowed On Streets That Don't Have Bicycle Lanes.

Glad your friend is OK. Be careful out there!

Nope. Tire blow-out lead to it.

He's a bit tired, bruised and scraped, but otherwise OK. He is self medicating as we speak

I did wonder a little if he might have caused it. He rides too far left, a lot of the time. He was also tired and running very slow. New Years day 2011, he was riding alone, not paying attention, and ran into the back of a parked pickup truck.

But the tire blow-out seems to be what caused it.

a bicycle lane makes no difference, there are so many unconscious American drivers out there, I see them weaving from oncoming traffic well into the bike lanes. Cell phone and texting don't help the matter

Here he is from this morning, about 5 miles into the ride. This is the first major patch of Bluebonnets we've seen this year.

Notice the "Tour de Taco" Jersey.

A bicycle lane makes no difference. There are so many arrogant bike riders out there, I see them weaving into traffic, well out of the bike lanes. Cell phones and texting are tough to do while riding with one or no hands.

The Redondo Beach motor cops LOVE to write them up 10 at a time for running red lights, blowing thru stop signs, and failure to yield to pedestrian right-of-way. Is usually accompanied by a 'no ID' citation. I guess it's difficult to take a credit card AND an ID in those 'read my a$$ crack' riding shorts.

I know it's different everywhere, but the SoCal riders do it to themselves.

I raced road bikes for two decades. In the last 8 years I've been hit twice by cars (one head on that resulted in back surgery). Both times were the drivers fault (the head on was cell phone distraction).

I give up!!!! Riding a bicycle on the road is simply too risky and dangerous. I cannot imagine a world in which my kids no longer have a father and my wife a widow because some idiot needed to read a text message or change a CD.

Sorry to say, but for me, the world has changed. It's never been this dangerous and there are no safe roads for bicycles.

I always try to give bicycle riders a wide, safe berth. But it does chap my azz when they disobey traffic signals, rules of the road, etc.

Not to mention that the bike lanes are usually so full of deris and glass that they are useless or worse than useless.
