My Son got a real street bike from a stranger!!

Hi.
My Son who wears his heart on his sleeve at age 12. He had his eye on a yamaha street motorbike that was sitting stagnant for a few months in our neighborhood.

This motorbike was set aside on the drive way and lived through the winter months unprotected!
At one time it was sitting on its side on the ground.
He told me that he would like it to get it going again-'if need be'.

It was my Sons idea to ask the owners -IF HE CAN HAVE IT!!
I was so worried that he would be dismissed. After all , its a yamaha street bike in pretty good shape.
I told him to please not to be sad if they dont go for it.

My Son left to ask. My Bud and I of course hoped for the best.

Then along comes my Son running and says hes got it!!
I couldnt believe it!

Anyway the conclusion is- When you were a Kid , did you have the balls to do something like that.

I sure as hell did NOT!

Fix it up and learn to ride it so he'll be ready when he's 16.

Hello
Unbelievably, the battery still works and we got the hazards going.
No KEY-dammit!
I figure $3oo bucks will send us.....ahem- me moving.
I told my Son that his wheels are his and anyone must ask for permission.

I had never had a street bike but a mini bike.

Im excited as heck to get it going. It is a significant bike.

I am so proud of his big balls!...SO TO SPEAK!!!

What kind of bike? If it's been sitting outside for a long time, the carbs and tank will almost certainly need to be cleaned out.

The nameplate is gone. The engine is 930c.c with a shaft drive.

930 cc's?

Sounds perfect for a 12 year old!

And with shaft drive, he won't have to put a rubber band around the bottom of his jeans to prevent it from getting caught in the chain.

Hmm. Neighbor gives a 12 y/o boy a 930cc streetbike. Weird. Am I misreading this?

If that is the case, then the bike will be ridden by you, not your son, either now or in 4 years, obviously. 930cc's and 16 y/o's do not mix. Unless you want to outlive your boy.

Speaking of you, how experienced a motorcyclist are you?

NO.....you are not misreading anything. I was floored when my Son almost on a dare came back with a real street bike.......
Yes.
My Son asked for the bike. He/we love to take anything apart and fix.

Of course he wont be riding it for sometime, but that is not HIS POINT.

He retrieved what he wanted and now he wishes to repair and then sell for possibly a small sand buggy.
I never had the guts to do anything like that when I was a KID-EVER.

So, how well do you know these neighbors?

No key? It's not stolen, is it?

I actually did things like this when I was a kid several times. Once my neighbor had a Sega Genesis that wasn't working, and I asked if I could have it to play with since I loved messing with electronics. Turns out the plug for power jack on the rear had came loose after someone had tripped over the cord and just needed resoldered. Mind you, this was back when the Sega Genesis was just out and cost about $200.

I still have it, actually.

Teach him how to ride and you can send him to the store for stuff... with a helmet on, the cops aren't gonna know he's 12.

You need a proper bill of sale.

Without a proper bill of sale, it is stolen property in the eyes of the law, and things go downhill really fast.
