Angry Rant: Local LE REFUSED to respond

Buddies cars were broken into, vandalized, and stereo and stuff taken. Doors were checked but they left that stuff alone. Vandalized the property. Know exactly who they were. They were all captured (three males) on video with very clear pictures. Obviously all three were engaging in the activity. Again, everything captured on video with very clear photos.

Issue? Buddies neighbor is local LEO. Their kids do not get along so families do not talk.

Local LE informed my buddy they would not have anything to do with the damage to his personal property. I do not understand what their rational was but they refused to come take a report, accept video showing the perps, basically do anything. His insurance will not cover without a police report and they do know who did the deed.

I'm rather upset and I do NOT have a dog in this fight other than this being some friends.

I've suggested he contact the State Police in order to file a report on the damages so he can file a claim with insurance AND file a complaint on the local LE with the state inspectors.

The family believes the neighbor LEO has something to do with a lack of response from the locals. I do not know how/why they feel this but the fact is, locals refuse to do anything even with timestamped video demonstrating the deeds.

Yep, zombies are taking over everywhere.....

Police are NOT required to respond. They have no duty to protect you.

There's also "Warren v. District of Columbia".

All the more reason why it is essential for us to protect ourselves, our own property and our loved ones.

Well, I don't see any chance for the LEO's to generate revenue in this instance so no wonder they refuse to respond

Mike, they live in a town just outside of Indy. I'd rather not post too accurate a piece of information.

IMHO, your best bet is the County Sheriff or State Police.

Hmmm, just talked to them. Seems about six other vehicles were broken into as well. He is the only one with video of the perps. Maybe he and the neighbors can pool together and get something done?

Good times.....

TELL HIM TO CONTACT HIS STATE REPRESENTIVE OR CONGRESSMAN!
Sorry for the caps but that was necessary.

If he contacts his state rep or congressman, they will call the mayor. The mayor's office will ask the chief of po'lice wuz up. He doan don't like that and will tell the po-po's to do their job.
They doan like the heat from the big boss and don't want to get repremanded and will quit-the-sheet.

I know, I've seen me do it before.
I've called my elected o'ficial many times for help after exhausting all other means and have been happy with the result every time.
One time a local asshat clown first-day-on-the-job pulled over my daughter in her new car. Well it wasn't new, my wife had bought it a few days earlier from a local dealer. Anywho the registration details were in the front window, she had all the purchase papers in the glove box that showed that all DMV registration fees were paid, the corksucker didn't care and gave her a ticket for expired registration.
Now that's a fix-it ticket but still carries a $25 court filing fee.
I called the popo office and beotched, they didn't care about me or my little problem.
I called my state rep and it was all taken care of, including an oppology.

See this is how it works: They like getting elected. To do that costs money. Votes are expensive.
They have staffs.
They tell their staff members to make some phone calsl, drop some names, write a letter, call in a favor etc. That doesn't cost the rep anything and in return, he or she is almost guranteed to get your vote and your family's vote and everyone you tell's vote.
It's the easiest and cheapest way to get votes and they are usually more than happy to help.

Contact the state police. File a formal complaint.

Contact the local media. Seems redonkulous that the local PD won't respond.

This is why folks tell the 911 operators that there is a gun during an incident when there isn't - to get the response.

Still, if your friend has a positive ID via video and knows who they are he can probably take them to Civil Court where the burden of proof is much lower than criminal court anyway. Just a thought...

When dealing with a situation like this it is best to know who has jurisdiction over whom. State police exist for a function and it may very well may be that they have little jurisdiction over the local police.

Now, the federal police are a different matter. But that might not be appropriate here....yet.

The people to call are the state attorney general. If a crime has been committed and the locals won't do anything, the state will. As long as a state law has been violated.

Of course any communication or transport of goods or suspects over state line will automatically bring this to the FBI.

Play the game well.

Sammy, you are starting to write like OJU, good idea though, especially if it is an election year for them.

I would stir up as much stuff as possible, and make it known what my suspicions are about the neighbor obstructing justice. That is a crime, nice when the cops are criminals, like the chief in SF, wife beater, witness intimidator, etc.

no sammy is starting to write like me..............................

heres my take on this crap. a crime WAS committed. it was even on video which is el supremo when and if it gets to court. but in the mean time i would call and VISIT EVERYONE from top to bottom or bottom to top whatevar yer modus operendi.

why? because the squeaky wheel gets the GREASE!

and heres the bottom line civil side or criminal side with budgets cut..........their "in" baskets are FULL to the BRIM! the quicker they can solve a civil or criminal case, they get lil stars next to their names and usually a raise. and as we all know...........everyone loves a raise and lil stars.

and then if all else fails............don the the 'ol NEEEEN-JA(ninja) suit, grab yer nun-chuks, and BECOME NEEN-JA VIGILANTE! if no neenja suit available.........then call CHARLES BRONSON!

I agree. My statement was made based on my state of residence, in which the State Law Enforcement Division trumps all lower level police departments (county or local) and also has the authority and duty to investigate allegations of wrongdoing, misconduct, nonfeasance / malfeasance, etc.

[by "state police" I don't mean the state patrol]

Another source of recourse may be the Office of the State Attorney General. Then again, this office may just have the duty to cover the state's ass.

Maybe they don't have the manpower.
In the county north of me the sheriff announced that on weekends they would not respond to property crimes because they were too busy with bodily harm crimes. The reason would probably send this thread to PARF, so I won't explain why.

Houston police usually won't come out for a car burglary, you have to go to the police station to file a report. BTDT.
