Hmmmm. Conversation with them this morning (they are BOTH Engineers if you can imagine such people marrying and reproducing ;-)
Neighborhood meeting with Mayor. Insurance company attorneys have now been in contact and REALLY REALLY want video. If nothing else, Ins Co will cover their own rears! Oh, multiple thousands of dollars in damage on at least this block. On a side note, I wonder if this has been happening in other nearby neighborhoods? Wonder if Ins. Co's will now go after these three for all the local issues? But we'll never know...

Last time I spent the night in Houston two kids broke into my truck and stole less than a dollar in change, my coat, and some books and items I had owned for up to 30 years. Cops actually caught the two as they were leaving my truck and I was arriving with my .38 I was taking to the range with my buddy, yes I was just leaving for the range carrying range bags. I'd be willing to bet that was the better outcome for all parties. Police refused to release my items to me (even the old books) but made the kids pay restitution for full replacement value of everything. I was financially able to buy new but it just is not the same thing being made financially whole versus having your same items back. Guess the kids got to keep all my stuff. David

Around here, several law enforcement agencies from municipal to county level have announced that they will no longer investigate property crimes involving less than $10,000 in value. They cite manpower and funding cutbacks in an attempt to justify this. Yet, at the same time, they have no trouble manning speed traps with half a dozen officers, or more.
Granted, many of those highly staffed speed traps are run by our State Patrol and have nothing to do with county or municipal departments. The latter two certainly do run their fair share of them, however. Particularly on weekends, when no doubt many of the officers manning these speed traps are pulling overtime to do so. And the police wonder why there is so much disrespect, distrust, and outright disdain for them among the people they "serve" and "protect". With Seattle cops making the local headlines almost daily for their unabashed thuggery (and the special Mayor's council formed to address this (in response to a scathing DOJ report on their "culture of violence") now falling apart), with departments announcing they will no longer investigate property crimes below a certain value, and with very visible speed traps just about everywhere we drive, is it really any wonder?

If I were a policeman in Indiana, I'd be very selective about responding to calls from homeowners.

During the Bernard Goetz issue in the NYC subways 25 or so years ago, George Will had an OP-ED in the WSJ in which he said society makes a deal with law enforcement, they enforce the law and we don't act as vigilantes.

I would too. Indiana already has legalized murder, now it's legalized murder of LEOs. I wonder what makes Rep. Pierce “ ... not concerned that we’re going to suddenly have meth-heads sitting in their La-Z-Boy with their shotgun and SB 1 in their hand.” Seems to me that's exactly what they can expect. Meth heads aren't exactly rational to begin with, now they've got legal cover.

meth is the biggest export from the county in which I reside.... LE is shutting down about one lab every other day around Bloomington/Monroe County (not where I reside but not too far away either) according to the news.

What is ridiculous? A LEO needs a warrant to enter a house uninvited. A Homeowner has a right to defend his property.

Hugh, it seems to me that if LEO fail to uphold their end of the social contract, we will be seeing a lot more "frontier justice," and things will get ugly really fast. Especially when the government checks stop going out when the dough to pay them is no longer available to borrow.

Call the Police and tell them you shot the perps, they'll be there in a matter of minutes.
When they show up, dont find any bodies and state "you said you shot them", hand them the video and tell them, yes, "I shot a VIDEO of them".

Next, most people will not closely inspect the law. I spent nearly 20 minutes searching for the text of the law or an accurate description of it. Most people won't do that. Most people will think it means exactly what you yourself just said: "A LEO needs a warrant to enter a house uninvited. A Homeowner has a right to defend his property." So, here is the state of the law in Indiana, as far as the average person knows. If a police officer is entering my home, and I think he doesn't have a warrant, I can shoot him dead to "defend my property". Repeat: I can kill a police officer for entering my property without a warrant. Does that not strike you as ridiculous?

Remember the case where the SWAT team broke into the wrong house? What if a cop forces himself into the wrong house accidentally at 3am and the owner shoots him also on mistaken identity? Guess what, homeowners going to jail NO MATTER WHAT. Doesn't matter how wrong the cop is....
One cry of "police" outside your front door does not clearly identify to the homeowner that it's legit. This situation terrifies me....

I still don't see how this iN law has anything to do with cops refusing to investigate a very easily solveable crime.
