You might be able to tell how I lean by the massive solar array on the roof of my house. The electric meter spins backwards every day...

You can, it did not cost me a penny. Solar Panels, Solar Power Energy Systems & Energy Efficiency Right now its averaging 6.1kw output and its not the high season yet.

Only thing is that living in Portland you would not have the 350 days of sun per year that we do here in Arizona. IMHO every house in the "sunbelt" should have solar panels on the roof from the get-go. Why in the world we are paying to keep all this $$ heading to the middle east is beyond me and one of the reasons why I put solar on the house.

Even in rainy grey Belgium, i make enough of it to serve my own needs...

Tesla was a genius, Edison was a scam artist.
Maybe "today" and beyond DC will be the forbidden fruit..But yesterday it would not work.
We are governed by Govt. thinking and powers at hand.
There is NO reason for most of us to be on the GRID.
If there is a reason "our" house is doing something wrong.

Also - Are the power companies required to buy your surplus electricity?

back in the CRT days I could simply look at a monitor and tell the exact refresh rate (60, 75, 90 100) up to 100hz. -Those each resonated like different frequency truck horns.

Depends on the State. Cali has to credit the surplus to the home owner.

Or the panel owner...New company canvasing my neighborhood. They put up the panels (no cost to homeowner) and you get the benefit of solar power augmenting your usage. Guess who gets paid for the surplus?

I've been considering it up in Seattle. The house is at just about the right angle and pitch to make it workable. The subsidies/credits here if you use all WA made parts (which is easy) and can manage to pump energy into the grid make it work out.

I think with all WA parts you get something like 3x the going rate on power you send back for the first few years.

Sounds like a damn good idea! At least, until SoCal Edison (and it's Northern Variant) get some legislation drafted.

I'm sure they are taking advantage of the panel subsidies before they expire.

Gonna look into it but, I'm leery of their property being installed on my roof and what their liabilities are concerning my insurance. Not to mention what if any utility easements become attached.

They were going door to door drumming up interest to see if they can set up mini grids in the area. They asked to see my utility bill and my meter. I told em "nope". If I'm interested I'll call.
