New Video of Philly Duck Boat Accident

Pretty creepy. After seeing this I can't believe only two people died.

Those things are death traps! I can't believe the insurance companies will even insure them. A duck ride business at Lake DeGray in Arkansas had one go down about 15 years ago. It was buttoned up because of cold weather. The main shaft seal blew and, IIRC, several tourists drown...basically all hands. They simply couldn't get out of the damn thing. I'd bet the two that died here were trapped in some way too.

Some of my wife's cousins drowned on that one.

That's insane. I can't believe that there are not some navigation rules that would prevent that type of thing.

I am sure there rules, but some rules were just not followed.

In addition to being death traps, they're pretty damn annoying.

Yes there are rules...

The right of road heirarchy is:

Not under command
Restricted by manuverablity (like a barge)
Constricted by draft
Fishing (commercial w/ nets ect. while fishing)
Sailboat
Power boat
Seaplane

It seems that the "Duck Boat" may have been without power and unable to move...the barge may have not had time to arrest forward movement or turn to avoid...although not knowing the location and the amount of time the barge had, I can't believe radio contact between the two couldn't have averted this disaster.

ETA: those barges create an amazing "sucking" force that would pull anyone in the water under the barge...really amazing the fatality count wasn't higher

if i remember correctly, the pilot of the tug was not at the wheel but on the computer or texting, taking care of a family problem.

The tug pilot was on a cell phone. The duckboat was broken down because someone left the radiator cap off and it over heated. THAT pilot should have tried to tie up on the side but he anchored in the middle...no one was wearing life jackets.

Screw ups on BOTH sides.

Just noticed, there's a person on the bow of the duck boat, they jump into the water at 3 seconds.

Looks like another person goes out the side window at 5 seconds.

Wonder if they were the 2 fatalities.

With that awning one would guess you'd have to 'duck' to get inside....
