Where Do The Years Go?

Thirty years pass in a flash: today marks 30 years since I graduated from college (Loyola College-Baltimore…current NCAA Division I Lacrosse Champions). When I think in terms of 30 years, I feel old as hell, yet it seems like it wasn’t that long ago, although a lot has happened since (mostly good): got married to a wonderful woman, have 2 great kids (rising junior in college (at the school that Loyola beat the crap out of in lacrosse on Monday) and rising senior in high school); still gainfully employed and in reasonably good health for an old codger at 52.

Here’s hoping for another 30 plus years and a few more NCAA championships for the Loyola Greyhounds.

Mike

No doubt...it's that I don't feel 52, although I haven't a clue what 52 is supposed to feel like!

"I hear ya. You're as young as you feel."
Yeah, well, comes a day you don't feel so young.
So have fun while you are young and healthy.
When you are old and slowing down it doesn't matter any more.
Have fun now.

I'm 58, I graduated UMASS in 79 (a couple of years in the USMC before that). I can't believe I moved to Los Angeles from Boston with about $100 in my pocket. 33 years in LA and married to the same wonderful women for 28 years. BTW at 52 you're a kid.

Seriously, guys. Age is just a number. I know lots of people way older than me who seem as young as me and people way younger than me that seem the same age as me. I love all of you guys and think you guys are great and I am 38. Age means nothing. Your attitude towards life and energy is what defines your "age".

My boy, the peanut, turned 9 yesterday. His sister will be 12 in two months. Feels like yesterday that I was changing diapers.

And I'm pushing 50, when did that all happen?

It is all relative. I am 65 and we went to visit my FIL in his care home yesterday and he is 96. There was a country and western singer entertaining the group and it was very enjoyable. What would bother me is when you have to have a catheter on you full time like some of these residents. I had one for two weeks and made me feel considerably older, restricted movement, uncomfortable etc. Like I always say you don't know what you have got until it is gone. Like Tweeze says you are as young as u feel. My wife and I walk at least an hour a day. My fil used to say once you hit 50 your energy level goes down. But depends on the individual.

I'm 47 and recently I laid 52 square meters of ceramic tiles in my house.
Believe me I felt all of my 47 years.
The last time I did anything like that was more than 10 years ago and although hard work it was done without any dramas. This time I really had to push myself to finish.

Yes the years fly by but if you're happy and doing the things you love then that's a great life.

If you want to find out how "old" you really are try doing something that you did in your youth... Like skate boarding or ice skating.

Health and genetics start to really loom large as you age, IMO. At 50, you can have 20+ years left of good health and fun or it can be the slide into misery.

I heard Steven Tyler say, "You're only as young as the girl you're feeling." I suppose there's truth to that.

There's a good reason for this. When you were very young...say 10 years old...one year represented a full 10% of your total lifetime. Summer vacations from school seemed to last forever...a whole year was an unimaginably long time. Now, when in your 50s, a year is only 1/50 of your lifetime...a much smaller, more easily-imagined slice.
When you were 10, getting your driver's license seemed so far off that it was almost impossible to imagine it ever happening. Now, thinking in terms of 5-year chunks of time isn't that hard at all. Events that happened a year ago can seem like just last month! As we get older, our perception of time constantly changes. This can be a good thing though...like when looking forward to retiring, or waiting on the birth of a grandchild.
