Hawaii.. best locations?

Posting this thread seems funny after just posting the GF's Kid's Bad Habit thread. lol.

However, being as he's about to graduate very soon, the GF has been considering a trip to Hawaii thru Costco's Travel plans.

She's wondering where the best locations are.

Right now, she's considering
Maui- Hyatt - 5 days - $1700 for two. Includes hotel, car, breakfast buffets, luau, ocean view room...seems like a good deal to me.

$1400 /2 - Kona...Sheraton... same inclusions as above except for luau.

What other locations/islands are good? Any other suggestions?

Any travel agents?

Personally, I think it's a dumb@ss idea, given the topic of the other thread.

Either is good, my choice would be the Big Island.

But what is the deal , is she taking her son? or the whole family going?
Just curious. It is interesting timing, you may want to hold off on the lessons at home in the mean time. :-)

I'm an active scubadiver instructror, hiker, explorer............some people want to read a book next to the resort pool..............to each ther own.

Yes on VRBO. Some killer deals there. If she has never been. I suggest Kaui. I am particular to Poipu Beach area. My wife took me five plus years ago when I had zero interest in Hawaii. Been back to the Big Island and Maui since. Think it is paradise. Want to move. Basically love it.

Go VRBO however. Package deals suck. Luaus are stupid. Be a travel ninja and read the blue books. They will be titles ______ Revealed. (with the island inserted where the underscore is)

Have fun.
Aloha.
Larry

why make it hard on him Larry, just post a link.....

The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook: Kauai Revealed [Book]

Poipu south shore of Kauai, Prince Kuhio Shores, can't go wrong, doesn't get any more beachfront unless you're underwater, awesome snorkeling right out front.

this is my favorite island. you can rent a car and drive the entire thing acting like a local. right smack in the middle there is a Poi factory..i walked in, and they treated me like a long lost friend..i bought so much of the stuff. who knew i liked it? my friend has a timeshare on it..and timeshares ONLY make sense when someone else owns them

next time, i would love to work some peacock bass fishing and bowhunting into the trip..so the big island may be my best bet.

Kauaii is my favorite island... but be aware not much night life...

The package quotes are for two, are they leaving you at home?

Big Island has the volcano... pretty impressive place to hike around if you are into nature... parts of it look like another planet. (and coffee plantations if you are into that).

Maui is nice but only been there once... IMHO I think you are pretty much safe with Hawaii as long as you stay close to the beach and avoid Honolulu and Waikiki. (and don't piss off the natives)

LOL! a passionate group for sure. i once was flirting with a girl "DANA" her boyfriend got pissed and asked me, "you want beef?"

i asked my hawaiian buddy, wtf that meant..he said, "looks like you are about to get your ass kicked".

the look on my face..made them laugh. her boyfriend "kimo" was a pretty cool dude. we all ended up together in college and became friends.

Ah, good idea, Wolfe. Go to the Big island, the southern most tip. The cliffs are high enough "hey, look over this edge"(nudge) and the currents will carry the little sht out to sea. --that'll teach him to steal cig's and cola

Seriously tho', Don't worry about optimizing. Just landing on any of the islands your mood will change for the better.

I've been to all of them at least twice, except Molokai (once). Molokai you will get the most stink-eye, followed by Kauai. The big island, Maui and Lanai I found to be stink-eye free. Oahu is a bit crowded, but happening.

Nephew is what he actually is. She's had him for a long time.
Not sure if I'll be going or not, depends how work is going and how busy I am.

Thanks for the good stuff here, I'll pass it on!

Hyatt Maui is very nice. BTDT. Ask for ground floor as then you can just walk out to pool or beach. But best idea is to get out of hotel in your rented cabrio and just drive... up to top of volcano, do a little road to Hana etc.. There is some night life in Lahaina.
Butofcourse my favourite island is Molokai because it is remote and old Hawaii. Papahaku beach is possibly the most beautiful (and dangerous) beach in the world and you may be the only one there. One traffic light. Make your own night life. Crazy, but I love it. Like a trip back in time.
You'll have fun whatever island you go to. Temps 75-85, 24x7. Wowza!
Good luck!

When bringing teenagers to Hawaii (especially for the first time), I think it would be best to stick to either Maui or Oahu 'cause they have the most to offer. Kauai & the Big Island (Hawaii) are beautiful but unless the kids are avid outdoor-types who get off on hiking or exploring, there's not much else there to entertain them. Oahu & Maui have some of the best beaches in the islands and there are lots of other things to do besides sunning and snorkeling to keep them from getting bored. There are some very good deals to be found on Oahu...just stay away from Waikiki. Don't waste your time going to any luaus either. And if you wind up on Maui, don't bother driving to Hana...the kid(s) will be bored to death (and you probably will too).

Agree with Rcooled, other islands are sleepers for kids. I will never, ever go to Oahu again. Went 2x and should have made it 0x.

That leaves only Maui left. Not really sure how many times I have been there, but it is at least 10+.

We typically condo at Puamana which is very close to Lahaina and some are literally 15 feet from the beach. Most condos have bikes available or you can rent them for the time you are there in downtown Lahaina.

http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/usa/hawaii/maui/west-maui/lahaina/puamana

If you are a Costco member, you pick up your rental car at the airport and drive right by the Costco. Load up and head to the condo.

Sorry I can't help. My only experience on Hawaii is watching Magnum PI on Netflix and that one Brady Bunch episode where Bobby unearths an ancient tiki which brings bad luck.

Beat me to it!

Or a little fishing trip... the current is very strong and swift... if someone were to accidentally fall overboard...

If you trully want to learn how to surf, head to the North shore of Kauai....Hanalei Bay's Black Pot beach is great place to learn, as the water is only chest deep, and the waves are a good size and fairly consistent. As you progress, simply head further North or off-shore a bit and you'll get into some pretty amazing surf conditions! Great place to do Stand Up paddle as well as you can head out further for some challenging ocean SUPing or head up the Hanalei River for some very peaceful, easy going paddling with great scenery! The locals are pretty laid back=minimal turf war action.

The North shore of Kauai can be quite wet though as it is officially "Rainforest", especially November to May and, as Scottmandue stated, there is virtually no night life.

Aloha and Mahalo.....surf's up!

As others have stated it really depends on what you want to do or not do ie: veg at the beach. Big Island is great for both. Pm me if you need any info for the Big Island. I like guitar talk to.

Aloha
