Bear(bare) encounter....

In the last couple of days a bear was reported to have attacked a man in his hot tub in Whistler BC. The bear was later shot for being aggressive. Another recent example was a man was dragged from his car by a bear. Apparently the man was a criminal anyway so the bear should have got an award for that.

I find these bear encounters fascinating but I try to keep my distance. If you want a good read there is a book by Stephen Herrero. I believe it is called Bear Encounters. I do not recommend reading it before tenting/camping. However I can't wait to get out there.

They trapped one a couple of miles from where I'm sitting last week:

One less bear roams the Oak Ridge Reservation. Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency officers lured a black bear into a cage trap at the High Flux Isotope Reactor's maintenance facility early Friday morning, June 1.

We now have grizzlies in our area. Last year, they were 6 miles south of town. Now, they are here. They ate a couple of campers year before last just outside of Cooke City. Gonna have to double-check when I walk out at night to tend the BBQ.

A friend that drives his 85 Carrera down from Alaska to Porsche Parade says the scariest thing possible is to have a breakdown in parts of the wilderness. Most of Alaska & Canada have bears that have learned a car is a nice place to find humans. They will rip the door right off and eat the folks inside.

There is a ravine not far from here. Goes from the hills down to the beach near my house. It is a grizzly highway. Bear tracks visible all summer.
People in the neighborhood are smart about trash and pets. So it's unheard of to see bear among the houses.
Still, it's a twenty minute walk away. Which is why I carry.

.44 mag with buffalo bore meplats or corbon meplats heavier the grain THE BETTER!

and if ya have a rifle................well .338 win mag or bigger. my fave is my 1895GS built to the hilt by nelson ford(thegunsmith.com) 45.70 with 500-525 gr bullets. once again meplat design.

man we have talked about this alot here. and alot of people with more bucks than brains think buying a .500 smith is the answer. well it aint and if ya think im a dumazz, go look at YOUTUBE.com and punch in .500 smith and wesson and watch the BOOFOONARY!

in jellystone park last august i carried my smith model 29 nickel 4" barrel .44 mag with buffalo bores(meplats) on a cross chest draw anywhere and everywhere i went with my 45/70 or socom M1-A ALWAYS WITHIN DAMN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO ME aka either on the ground or leaning against a tree very close to me or in truck or camper shell.

while i was sitting in front of "ol faithful" at damn near the exact time we were sitting watching the geyser not 1.5 miles north of a gazzillion people a guy got munched on DEAD by a grizz.

you are now allowed to carry a weapon in a national park and if you have a CCW carry concealed also.

i can guuurranteee.................if ya carry open you will have more people staring at you than if you were naked ! fishing pretty much everyone carries open obviously.

on the madison river and the upper yellowstone where the trout fishing is pure nirvana......................YOU WILL SEE / ENCOUNTER BEARS! and thats a FACT!

yer ONLY going to get off a few shots if taken by surprise if just one shot. thats why i went with a PURPOSE BUILT 4" barrel magnaported with trigger work and a cross chest draw holster with spare speedloader pouches.

i can also GUURRRAAANNNTEEEEEE that shooting buffalo bore and corbon heavy grain bullet rds will make ya see GAWD IN FREEKING TECHNICOLOR due to recoil. so with that in mind.............go shot a .460/.480 or even big daddy .500 and see how many times you can shoot those damn things without it jumping out of yer hand....................and by then...................YER GONNA BE BEAR POO!

We had a cabin at 7,000 ft in a natl park. Damn right everyone carries. Saw plenty of bear damage from bears trying to get into trash, cars, cabins - anywhere there's something to eat.

I heard something to the effect if a bear comes after u, go under your car because the bear is too big to get under a car. However that does not work for the Porsche because they are too low to the ground. By the way I love your bear stories and envy your gun laws.

I bought 3 bullets at a range to shoot that thing. I'm 6'1" and 195# and I was pretty damn fit when I did. I gave one of the $5.00 bullets back to the range. Didn't need it.

I drove up and dwn from Alaska couple years ago
There are people on BIKES way out in the Middle of the Yukon! !
I think this is a bunch of HYPE.......Bears are opportunist...period.
That said if a grizz comes at you you are being disciplined (play dead)
If the "Little Blacky comes at you RUN like helll cause you are on the MENU!
When i stopped at the Hot Springs I asked how the "Bear Deal" was.
The Guy said dont worry about the bears..a Moose killed some one here a couple weeks ago....
I know you know someone killed by car wreck.....
I am dam sure you know of no one killed or mauled by a bear.
Just HYPE
Poor bears
poor sharks

On this story you forgot to mention that the guy was already dead from an overdose and it was the smell of decomp that attracted the bear.

He was a convicted murderer, he and two others were charged with killing a Langley, B.C. man in 1993 who they believed had sexually assaulted their family member.
I don't know the circumstances in this case, but if you raped one of my kids and I knew you did it and you got off, you would need to be watching your back for the rest of your life.

Not putting miles on your car is like not having sex with your girlfriend, so she'll be more desirable to her next boyfriend.
